The program was running under the process ave.exe for my computer.
Also running as ave.exe on one of my computers. After killing the process it kept restarting – for example, when I tried to run AVG.EXE it started ave instead. I found ave.exe and deleted it. After that, I found many programs I tried to run would bring up the “what program do you want to use to open this..” dialog, instead of just starting up. Even regedit did this. I realized this was happening with every program that had been started while ave.exe was running – those that had not been invoked started normally. So I suspect this is rather nastier than just a fake AV scam.
PT : You need to modify registry keys. Try launching regedit as new process from task manager, and fix these keys that contain ave.exe.
