How to remove HeroCodec?

April 29th, 2009

What is HeroCodec?

HeroCodec is yet another fake codec pack. Before even beggining to explain how this thing works, I’ll say this: all the codecs you will ever need are available for free – may Google be your guide. HeroCodec, much like Luxe Codec XP and PC Codec Pack, uses malicious tactics both to spread and to sell. This parasite usually enters the system by using the Zlob trojan and tries to trick you into purchasing the codec pack by feeding you misleading info.

The HeroCodec implies that you can’t play certain types of media without owning it. This rogue uses popups and error messages to convey it’s message – you’ll see these when trying to play video and audio files.  The information is obviously false, but that evidently doesn’t stop people from buying it and buying HeroCodec in the process.

Do NOT download or buy HeroCodec and remove it immediatelly upon detection.

HeroCodec is classified as Rogue Application. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake messages, stating that your computer need particular components, or need to be fixed or has other serious problem that needs only HeroCodec can help you to solve these after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads HeroCodec trial version, it offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, HeroCodec not only does not fix the errors, but it takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Applications, such as HeroCodec, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement, or comes bundled with various freely shiped programs like codecs. It then proceeds to download or even install HeroCodec, which is another way for Rogue application to spread itself.
