I recently got infected by vista gaurdian 2010, i used kaspersky internet security 2010 to remove it, but, i have a dilemma, now when i open a program or mainly internet explorer, it ALWAYS asks me which program i want to open it with, how do i fix this?? every time i open a new webpage the “open with” box comes up, very frustrating!! please help!!
Ben : You have to restore default program settings. Go to start -> Default Programs and Associate a file type or protocol with program.
I’m seeing the same behavior as Ben Dresman. When trying to run a *program*, like IE, cmd.exe, etc., a window is displayed asking which application to use to open the program file I just tried to run.
How do we recover from this?
Thanks!
i recently deleted it through coding (a friend helppes) but now ever since i did that sites like youtube and yahoo answers look strange. and i cant play videos. how can i fix it?
@Chanel First, just try reinstalling adobe flash player. If that doesn’t work, then (if you aren’t using IE, that is) just delete and reinstall the browser itself.
I have the same problem as Ben, how do I fix this?!?
@Ben Dresman
Did you ever get it fixed Ben?
My computer is currently infected, and my anti-virus won’t pick it up as being a problem, so i can’t get rid of it. i downloaded some things off the internet to help me, and every time it picks it up, it tells me “please buy our software to remove” i can’t afford anything right now. is there any free programs that will allow me to get rid of this? thanks.
I would like to download the spyware doc from here. The only problem is on my infected computer I cannot get onto any websites and the one I want to get on is this one. What should I do? Thanks.
hey guys,
for those of you havinjg trouble with executables you should read this page
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/exefile.htm
it works with vista too, it allowed me back into the registry and all the other .exe files.
Dear Admin,
I’m having the same problem as Ben, but when I go to start and click on default programs it still ask me to select a program to open with. I’m unable to reset teh deafaul programs so it will stop asking me this for every program i want to open. Can you please advise.
@Admin : i have looked at the “set associations” but i have no idea which one is internet explorer or most other programs i use.. it seems to be just the executable ones plus when i click on an mp3 or a avi file media player no longer comes up. very baffling situation? im half thinking about sendin the pc into the shop but i dunno if they’ll even be able to do it i’d much rather do it myself that way i learn… oh and if i right click a file and click on “run as administrator” it open with out a drama for those of u that need a quick fix.
Jon, Try right-clicking on your internet icon and selecting ‘Browse without add-ons’. I dunno, but i was having the same problem and it worked with mine….
Hey guys I am having the same problem everytime when I am trying to open a file it always ask me what file I want to open it with. In addition it does not let me use IE, only Mozilla. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks in advance
I got the same problem with asking what program to open. I right clicked and told it to open as admin and that corrected the issue. I still may do a format and start over ..ugh
I have just deleted the registry files for vista internet 2010 (by just finding the files, right clicking and clicking delete, please tell me if this was wrong to do.) Now just about everything, but the internet won’t work because, for example a notice appears when I click I-Tunes (Top Bar) “C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe”(Body) “This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.” I have no idea what to do, EVERYTHING does that (for its respectful file) even things like System Restore and Spybot are running notices like this. Please if someone knows how to fix this, explain SLOWLY and simply…I’m not very good at this computer thing.
Nicholas : press ctrl+shift+esc, launch task manager, set show processes from all users and confirm administrator access. Then find a new task in menu and launch regedit.
Before that download to usb/cd on another pc (if you can’t access network ) this fix : http://www.winhelponline.com/downloadattachment.php?aId=0c29b045a103b7542fac32bb2e06f44a&articleId=165
You will need to import it using regedit, and it should fix exe file associations.
I am having an even worse problem. The Vista Guardian 2010 page comes up when I open internet explorer. It does not let me go to a different webpage. It stays on the same scene titled Internet Explorer Alert. How do I fix this? I cant go to another page to download anything to remove it.
@admin
Sorry to rebother you but I can’t get regedit up. I went to Start, typed in Run, then typed in Regedit and the associations error poped up for it. Is there an other way into it. I found that if I manually go into a file Ex. Music and click on an MP3 my itunes will pop up. I just can’t get itunes up without using a minor file first. I would love to get my computer fixed using the exe association files fixer thingamagig that you have but I just can’t regedit up.
@Amitae
You have to kill the virus first. The point of it is to hold your internet ransom “Pay me $60 and I’ll let you use your internet” (it won’t give it back anyways but that’s basically what it’s saying) If you follow the instrutions above you should kill it but watch out. One screwed up registry file can mess everything up, as with my situation.
I figured out how to get Register Editor up and I have downloaded PCMedikit (the site you sent) I found the import button on RegEdit but…what do I import and where do I import it to. (I also have the Medikit program on a USB if that mattered.)
I think a lot of people are having the problem with having their default program disabled by the vista guardian virus. You can enter into many of them by right click then “run as admin”. I downloaded “miscrosoft security essencial” and was able to get into the program by using right click and run as admin, i did a full scan over night and it deleted 2 trojan viruses. I’m not sure if these are the ones and using task manager i disabled “AD” so i don’t see anymore pop-ups, but the problem still exist where i have to choose program everything i do the normal double click on icon. I tried using the option of setting default program assos with program but i believe the rogue prevent me from opening the option. Did miscrosoft security essencial not disable the virus and what should i do?
i got vista guardian infected on my computer around a month ago and after norton anti virus removed it,i think it did at least, it won’t let me install java runtime environment 6 and all i get is a message saying “error 1606.could not access network location 0″ also whenever i try to open a game or programs like sony vegas, i get a box that says open with and gives me a list of programs, it didn’t do this before. what do i do and what is happening
also whenever i try to acces security center on my control panel, it won’t let me and i get a message saying C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe application not found.
when i try to download the spywar doctor, i get a box that pops up that says open with and i have no idea on what to use, so i can’t download it
this is annoying.please help
Please help! How do I remove the registry entries? Or even access them on my laptop?
Glad to see I am not the only one going nuts with this thing. I have freakin McAfee and it should remove this but it wont wtf?
@ash
Unfortunately I don’t know of any free ones, but I sympathize with your situation. Nobody should have to buy more programs on top of what you have to protect your computer. Since I always see people advising people to download spyware doctor, I am begining to believe they are the ones responsible for the malware to begin with. Either way it is bolstering their sales. Food for thought.
I’m having the same problem as Nicholas and I need a solution. How did you get the regedit to start working again?
Steve: I recommend people to have at least one GOOD antivirus or security suite, maybe with anti-malware as well… The problem is there are a lot of products pushed together with fresh PC’s that are not really that good, but claim to provide “best” protection. And some people use none. If people would read before choosing or being pushed an antivirus or other software, there would be much less security problems.
What I disagree is your opinion that the manufacturers are behind rogues. Too big competition between them : If one would be behind rogues, then others would disclose that that fact. And thats why I will never promote single tool as ultimate solution for all security problems. However, at the moment Spyware Doctor is very good at solving these problems and there are too few other efficient choices for real-time protection and automatic spyware and malware removal.
I removed vista virus however I’m prompted to choose a program to open any and every program I try to open. Any advice?
Saw your response above about the issue of prompting for a program but mine ask evefrytime i open anything.@admin
@admin
I’m having the same problem as Nicholas, and I’ve downloaded the PC Medkit (Blitware); I’m just trying to figure out how to use it with regedit. I have the setup downloaded, the actual program won’t download.
I can only open programs using “run as administrator”, and can’t complete setup of the PC Medkit – it gives me the “This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.” error.
I tried importing the PC Medkit setup file into regedit, and it wouldn’t take – “Cannot import C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\pcmedkit_setup.exe: the key selected is invalid.”
Is there any help you can give me with this? Thanks so much – you helped me get rid of that horrid virus with your awesome advice!
To get access into exe. or the internet, open up the task manager and cancel the ave.exe file. It’ll probably have no description or just ave.exe. When you delete it, you get access, but it may pop up again so you;ll have to cancel it again.
@admin
wait, I deleted this vista guardian crap but now they have my information b/c i acually bought it!! what do I do??
Nelly : Talk with your bank. Check your account if there are charges, then dispute those. In worst case, change your CC .
My computer was infected by Vista Guardian 2010. I have just used the FREE version of Avira Antivir and it has removed the infection successfully.
Try the below steps. It worked for me for Vista.
1. Download and Install the “STOPzilla_Setup.exe”
2. After installation put scan.
@DeiStarr
WARNING! Do NOT be fooled by Blitware/PC Medkit..A scam…renders your pc totally useless. Took pc to 2 tech folks BOTH of whom knew about this scam and said lots of folks were bringing their pc’s in to try to recover after downloading and PAYING for Blitware PC Medkit and their Driver Fetch and File Help. I was lucky to get my money back. Some have not been so lucky. I had to buy a new pc.
