Problems with Driver Magic

Detected by antivirus scanners

Driver Magic is a program that offers to update your device drivers. It can be downloaded from Thedrivermagic.com for free, but there’s also a full version that can be purchased. Driver Magic’s free version appears to have some technical issues which makes it very frustrating to use.

The programs’ installer is detected by many reputable antivirus scanners: Virustotal.com. It’s flagged as Riskware, Malware, Unwanted, Adware, and PUP (potentially unwanted program). Not really malicious, but still something to be careful of.

During its installation, Driver Magic offers to install an additional program, another PUP that also gets flagged by some antivirus scanners.

Driver Magic's installer gets detected by 14 scanners on VT.

Offers unnecessary features

Driver Magic promises to enhance the performance of your PC by updating some drivers. It also promises to clean your PC by removing unnecessary items, enhance your disk speed, improve the startup time of your computer, even protect you from online threats.

These promises are a bit misleading for a few reasons:

  • Device drivers already get updated by Windows Update. A driver updating utility by a third party creator is very unnecessary.
  • Startup items can also be managed very easily without Driver Magic’s help, right in Windows settings (Support.microsoft.com).

Driver Magic appears to be made by Innovana Thinklabs Limited, a company that is also behind ITL Driver Updater and Driver Tonic – other driver updaters that are considered to be potentially unwanted. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Driver Magic is also bad, but it’s something to keep in mind. These different programs offer very similar features and are released by the same company, and yet they’re separate. It’s so strange.

Like most potentially unwanted programs, Driver Magic offers something redundant and unnecessary and tries to make itself look more useful than it really is.

In my personal experience, it’s also quite a laggy program. And I’m not the only one who had some technical issues with Driver Magic, based on AppEsteem’s description.

Driver Magic offers you to upgrade the program.

How to remove Driver Magic

You can uninstall it manually. On Windows 10, you can remove it in the Settings app, the Apps & features section. You can also use the Control Panel. Allow the uninstaller to make changes to your device and close the browser tab that opens when you remove the program.

Remember to remove the apps that might have been installed together with Driver Magic, such as Win Magician and an antivirus web app. You can arrange your installed programs in Control Panel or the Apps & features page by installation date, which helps you see when your programs were installed.

It’s helpful to use an anti-malware program, such as Spyhunter for Windows. They can scan your PC and show you what potentially unwanted and low-reputation programs might be lurking on your device and what programs you might need to remove.

If you paid for Driver Magic, just don’t forget that it’s a subscription system. Don’t forget about it and, if you decide to remove Driver Magic from your PC, make sure to cancel the subscription, too.
