What is the URL:Blacklist detection

You may see pop-ups from your antivirus program that say “Threat secured”, referring to websites infected with URL:Blacklist.

We’ve safely aborted connection on [URL] because it was infected with URL:Blacklist

URL:Blacklist is a type of detection of a malicious website. It is very similar to URL:Mal, URL:Phishing, and HTML:Script-inf. It implies that the detected site is dangerous.

One of the most famous blacklists used by antivirus scanners is the Google Blacklist. You might have seen a warning by your internet browser saying “Deceptive site ahead” or “The site ahead contains malware”. Google is said to blacklist around 10,000 websites daily.

The URL:Blacklist warning may appear when you’re trying to visit a blacklisted website or when a program on your computer is trying to open one. The URL refers to the address (name) of the website. If your antivirus finds that the URL is included in a blacklist, it blocks the connection.

AVG detects a site as infected with URL:Blacklist.

Reasons for the URL:Blacklist detection

Malicious site

Sometimes, a website is detected as URL:Blacklist because it is doing something bad:

  • It could be a scam site. For example, a tech support scam site (for example, the IOS /MAC Defender Alert).
  • It could be a phishing site trying to steal visitors’ personal information or their online accounts. (Scammers can even get around two-factor authentication!)
  • Maybe it’s encouraging visitors to download a malicious file or downloading malware automatically.
  • It may be a notification spammer. These are adware sites that hijack notifications to show pop-up ads in the browser.
  • Malicious file. Websites have files saved on them. Your antivirus program may have detected a malicious file about to be opened in your browser, such as a suspicious script.

The URL:Blacklist message may appear when you are browsing the web. If you tried to visit a malicious site or if you clicked on a malicious link, your antivirus program stops the malicious site from opening and shows the URL:Blacklist warning.

Alternatively, the URL:Blacklist warning may show up when you don’t even have your browser open. It’s possible that a program on your computer is trying to connect to a blacklisted site. Click the “See details” option on the URL:Blacklist window to see what program or file caused the warning.

Infected website

Even seemingly safe websites can be detected. One reason for that is malicious redirect infections. It’s when regular websites get infected with malicious code that causes them to redirect visitors to malicious sites.

This sort of URL:Blacklist detection is likely to be temporary. The owner of the site will find out about the infection, remove it from their site, ask antivirus companies to reevaluate the detection, and fix the situation.

However, abandoned sites get infected, too, and their owners don’t intervene, leaving the sites for malicious actors.

How to examine the detection

The URL:Blacklist pop-up includes information about what site was detected and what program was trying to open it. This is useful information for finding out what causes the attack. Click the “See details” button in the lower right corner of the pop-up.

For example, when you see the URL:Blacklist warning and click the button to see more details, you can see what process caused it. If its name ends with the name of your internet browser, such as chrome.exe or opera.exe, then your browser was trying to open the site. Maybe you clicked on something, or maybe a browser extension did something.

If the process is not your browser, it could be malware. You should follow the file path and scan the file with antivirus programs (you can use sites like Virustotal.com, provided that the file is not personal).

How to remove URL:Blacklist

If you were using the site

If you were regularly using a website that has suddenly been detected as URL:Blacklist, then you may want to find a different site to use. You can also contact the administrators of the site and tell them about the detection. They might be able to take care of this.

Of course, false positives do happen and sites can be blacklisted mistakenly. Contact the support of your antivirus program to ask why the URL is being detected as URL:Blacklist. There might be a very good reason for it, but if you’re sure there’s not, then report it as a false positive. Here’s a link for AVG: Avg.com.

If you’re sure the site being detected as URL:Blacklist isn’t dangerous to you, you can add it to your antivirus program’s exceptions. This will stop your antivirus program from blocking the site. Here are the instructions for AVG: Support.avg.com.

Just be careful and make sure that you truly trust the site that you’re whitelisting. Just because a site used to be safe doesn’t mean it is safe right now. Err on the side of caution.

If you weren’t visiting the site

If the URL:Blacklist warnings appear even when you are not browsing the internet, then there could be a malicious program causing this. Scan your computer with your antivirus program or other antivirus programs (Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, or others). Make sure that your antivirus program has the latest updates.

If the URL:Blacklist warnings only appear when you are visiting specific websites, then you may want to stop visiting those websites. They might have, for example, partnered with a shady advertising company to show pop-under ads for malicious websites.

There’s the chance that a bad browser extension is trying to contact a malicious site, also. Check the extensions installed on your browsers and remove or disable all of them. See if the URL:Blacklist warnings disappear. Check the notification settings in your browser. Reset the browser, if needed.
