ProntoApp Safari Malware - How to remove

Complaints by Mac users about ProntoApp go back almost a year. This application is a malicious browser add-on that causes system instability and browser crashes – the symptoms vary and are more severe for some users. ProntoApp infects the Safari browser but causes problems even to those who primarily use other browsers. If your Mac is infected with ProntoApp, don’t delay and get rid of this malware quickly.

ProntoApp might appear when it shows an alert that it’s been installed. People who are being harassed by the malicious app didn’t install it intentionally, of course. This add-on likely spreads through fake software updates that show up on malicious websites. It then gets downloaded and installed under false pretenses and might force Safari’s search settings to some obscure fake search engine.

You might be warned by your OS that ProntoApp will damage your computer if it’s not removed, however, deleting this malware can be quite a chore. When deleted normally, it comes back soon – sometimes, under a new name. Hunting down the files that ProntoApp left in the Library folders (like LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons) can be difficult because the files are obscured by using names unrelated to “ProntoApp”.

Dangers of using ProntoApp

Apps like ProntoApp come under different names, like CentralStructured and NameSync, but they have many similarities. For one, they hijack the browser and can capture important information. This includes things like browsing history and search keywords which are great for advertisers. More concerning is that ProntoApp can also see passwords, credit card numbers, and other important information in Safari. Browser hijackers are often used to advertise to the victim by either forcing them to use a particular website by setting it as the home page in browser settings or by injecting ads right in their browser.

Also, ProntoApp is considered adware. Apps like it can be used to display pop-ups in your Mac by being set as the default application to open certain file types. The pop-ups can be used to advertise various paid programs and even make them look as if they’re associated with or endorsed by Apple when they’re not.

Additionally, ProntoApp and similar apps have caused some people serious technical difficulties:

  • crashing and freezing Safari,
  • malfunctioning apps,
  • loss of control over the mouse,
  • a blank screen that is only fixed by restarting the Mac.

ProntoApp is bad not just for privacy, but for productivity. Warnings, alerts, a modified browser are real problems.

How to avoid hijackers like ProntoApp

It’s difficult to know the scale fo ProntoApp infections because many victims have to deal with a similar app under a different name. One of the main sources of these malicious applications seem to be fake software installers. Messages like “Update your browser” or “Your Flash Player might be out of date” are used to trick people to run installers for malware under the guise of software updates.

These malicious websites appear after clicking on bad ads and going to infected websites. Besides that, an adware virus can redirect you to such websites. Adware viruses end up causing more adware infections, plus more serious malware.

To avoid apps like ProntoApp being downloaded on your computer, it’s good to limit visits to shady and unreliable websites that like to show dangerous ads. Also, it’s good to scan every download with an anti-malware tool to make sure that it’s safe.

How to remove ProntoApp

Remove suspicious applications from your Applications folder. Also, you can look for files related to ProntoApp in your Mac in the common locations where it’s likely to hide – in the ~/Library/LaunchAgents, Library/Application Support, and /Library/LaunchDaemons folders. You can also use an application to search for related files or use an app uninstaller that has this functionality. As ProntoApp is detected by antivirus tools, you can also use an antivirus program to get rid of ProntoApp. Combo Cleaner is an example of an app that can find malware and has an app uninstaller in it, but any trusted antivirus tool for Macs would work.

Afterward, make sure that you have 2-factor authentication enabled for your online accounts. In case your passwords were exposed to ProntoApp, you might want to change them.
