Nusmash.com is a hijacker

Nusmash.com is a webpage that has a search box and not much else. The search box leads to Yahoo.

It’s not entirely clear who is behind Nusmash.com, other than that it might be the same people who made Linkury, SafeFinder, Search Bee, and many other alternative search portals.

Nusmash.com is a browser search hijacker. It gets installed as an extension and changes some settings in your browser:

  • It changes what sites deliver your search results (the default search engine).
  • It may control what sites display your ads.
  • It also collects data about your search habits and interests.
  • Nusmash.com can also use notifications to deliver pop-up advertisements.

Nusmash.com makes money from advertising. It can direct its users to affiliated sites and it can direct ads to people based on their interests, making the ads more efficient. However, like other hijackers, such as My Inbox Helper, it fails to deliver any useful features, acting like a leech.

Nusmash.com is not very visible once it’s installed. It behaves like a Yahoo redirect, but it doesn’t change your home page. Still, it might open new browser tabs for you and it can redirect to malicious websites.

Nusmash.com's new tab page looks like a neat search page.

How hijackers get installed

As Nusmash.com doesn’t have any useful features, it can’t be advertised based on them. Instead, Nusmash.com tricks people into installing it or just sneaks onto computers with the help of other programs.

Ads for Nusmash.com usually look like generic installation and download links and pages. They are advertised on file download and media streaming sites as pop-ups that show up after interacting with the site. As a result, people who see one of Nusmash.com’s ads might believe it to be a legitimate download link, rather than the installation link for Nusmash.com.

The Nusmash.com hijacker can also come included in the installers of various free programs downloaded from freeware sites. In this case, it might not even warn users before being installed.

Pirating sites are the most likely to spread a hijacker like Nusmash.com. Use anti-malware tools and antivirus programs to stay safe, but most importantly, stay vigilant while browsing the web and don’t install unfamiliar browser extensions.
