Max Uninstaller - How to remove

Max Uninstaller is supposed to be a utility to help you remove programs from your Windows PC, but thanks to its issues, it’s not recommended for anyone to use. Many security vendors consider Max Uninstaller to be potentially unsafe, especially because it can easily fall into the hands of people who don’t need it. Like registry cleaners and PC optimizers, Max Uninstaller is a potentially unwanted program that makes itself look more useful than it really is.

Problems with Max Uninstaller

Many antivirus programs find Max Uninstaller to be potentially harmful (VirusTotal link). There are currently 28 out of 69 detections, which is rather a lot. If you read the detection names, many label Max Uninstaller as a “Deceptor” or “Unwanted”, which means that though Max Uninstaller is not really dangerous, it should still be avoided. Even Google Chrome Safe Browsing warns you not to open Max Uninstaller’s home page.

Some experts have an issue with Max Uninstaller lacking a free trial. You can download Max Uninstaller for free and use it to scan for files, but there’s no way to try its removal function for free. I didn’t even find a mention of a refund policy on Max Uninstaller’s site.

Max Uninstaller is a PC utility, and many of these are viewed with suspicion – especially ones without a free trial. There are way too many malicious and deceptive programs out there that claim to help you manage and optimize your PC, but instead, just scare you into buying an expensive but useless program. Examples include Advanced Clean Pro, Full PC Care 2.0, Driver Fixer, and others.

Max Uninstaller and other third-party PC utilities may try to scare users. They find as many files as possible to remove, it’s like a contest – as if the best optimizer is one that deletes the most files. Even when the files help PC performance, like cache and cookies, many optimizers label them as malicious and tell you to delete them. Thus, Max Uninstaller is a bit suspect.

Another issue with Max Uninstaller is editing your registry. The Windows registry is an important list of settings and a mistaken modification could cause serious problems. Max Uninstaller finds the registry keys created by programs. Deleting them is fine in most cases, especially if the program would remove them during the uninstall process anyway. But it’s also not really useful. In some specific cases, you do need to edit your registry keys to solve certain issues, but in general, Microsoft doesn't recommend using registry cleaners. Unused registry keys don’t hurt your PC’s performance, anyway.

Max Uninstaller is detected by 28 programs on VirusTotal and blocked by Chrome.

Alternatives to Max Uninstaller

People find Max Uninstaller when they search for ways to remove or uninstall programs. There are three reasons for why one may want a third-party program uninstaller:

  • they don’t know how to uninstall a program on Windows,
  • they want to remove any and all related files that an uninstalled program might leave behind,
  • they can’t seem to uninstall a program through normal means.

Microsoft provides instructions for how to uninstall a program using the Control Panel on this page and this method works very well in most cases. Occasionally, a program can’t be uninstalled that simply but provides its own removal application, which is a bit annoying but works fine. Try it before using Max Uninstaller or another third-party remover.

When uninstalling a program, how well it cleans up after itself depends on the program’s developers. Sometimes programs leave behind components because other programs may be using them, like versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables. Max Uninstaller may still be useful if a program left behind unnecessary files. That said, these additional files do not cost any performance, so fretting over them is usually not worth it. If you want, you can use Microsoft’s own junk removal tools to free up some disk space.

When it’s about programs missing from the Control Panel Programs list, there are a few possible explanations. Some were designed to be hidden like this as an invasive marketing tactic; you should probably avoid such programs. Luckily, they often provide their own removal solution. Sometimes, you might need to reinstall the program for it to show up in the Programs list. It could also be a technical issue – maybe one of your programs created a too-long registry key. Here's what Microsoft says about this.

In the end, most PC users never need Max Uninstaller and most would not benefit from it.
