GlobalAdviseSearch - How to remove

GlobalAdviseSearch is a malicious Mac process and a browser extension. It shows you ads and spies on you and it can hijack your proxy settings to send your traffic to an untrustworthy server. GlobalAdviseSearch can make online apps (like your web browser) stop working, slow down your computer, and show random pop-ups. Removing it requires you to find and delete a few files in your Library folder and remove GlobalAdviseSearch from your browser extensions.

GlobalAdviseSearch infection symptoms

GlobalAdviseSearch doesn’t affect all its victims the same way, so you might not notice it right away. But here are some of its possible symptoms – symptoms that have been reported by victims of GlobalAdviseSearch and related adware, like TechNetSearch, BeginnerData, and DisplayUpdate:

  • web browsers and other online apps (like the email client) freeze and hang,
  • internet is really slow,
  • pop-ups appear telling you that an application has been installed,
  • GlobalAdviseSearch returns after being deleted,
  • your mouse cursor gets hijacked,
  • using the browser infected with GlobalAdviseSearch, you can see a lot more ads than normal,
  • a new Profile is created.

GlobalAdviseSearch creates a Profile that’s used to keep it installed. You can see it in your System Preferences. Most home computers don’t have profiles, as those are used by enterprises and administrators to manage multiple Macs. They can force settings and applications. But GlobalAdviseSearch is abusing this setting to stop you from uninstalling it.

GlobalAdviseSearch is a browser extension. You probably have more than one web browser, but Safari is the affected one most of the time. GlobalAdviseSearch starts up together with the infected browser and it can read and change your data on the sites that you visit. This includes your passwords, credit card number, and whatever other information you may type it on that browser.

That said, the main goal of GlobalAdviseSearch seems to be to show you more ads.

A frequent cause of GlobalAdviseSearch infecting a Mac is installing fake Adobe Flash updates and fake operating system updates. These malicious sites do a pretty good job of faking Mac OS pop-ups:

Mac adware

Although Macs are safer than Windows computers in general, they can still get infected with malware. GlobalAdviseSearch is adware and it manipulates your internet settings and your browser. The goal – to show you ads and to collect the ad revenue. There are a lot of issues for the victims:

  • Loss of privacy – your browsing activity is tracked and used to show you personalized ads. Who knows who gets access to all that data. It’s not like GlobalAdviseSearch has earned our trust so far.
  • Dangerous ads – adware generally shows ads that are more harmful than average. GlobalAdviseSearch can show ads that mainstream ad-networks and publishers try to avoid:
    • scams (fake giveaways, fake investment opportunities),
    • adware and malware,
    • adult content and gambling sites,
    • shady medical goods.
  • Distracting ads that make it hard to browse the web – GlobalAdviseSearch is unscrupulous about showing loud, untidy ads that pop up on top of content, filling text with links, and replacing ads on the sites you visit, potentially stealing their ad revenue.

How to remove GlobalAdviseSearch from your Mac

To delete GlobalAdviseSearch, you should first start your Mac in Safe Mode. Safe Mode stops unnecessary programs from running. Just hold your Shift key while you boot up your Mac.

Now, look for GlobalAdviseSearch files in these folders:

  • /Library/LaunchDaemons
  • /Library/Application Support and ~/Library/Application Support
  • ~/Library/LaunchAgents

You can go to these folders by using the “Go to Folder” function found in the “Go” menu of Finder.

The files that you need to delete may be named something other than “GlobalAdviseSearch”, so just look for suspicious files and look them up. Or scan them with an anti-malware program, such as Combo Cleaner. However, anti-malware programs can’t always recognize all the suspicious files, but they can help you discover other malware and clean your computer. For example, do you still have the installer that originally infected your Mac with GlobalAdviseSearch?

These malicious startup items that you need to delete are responsible for GlobalAdviseSearch restarting even after you quit its process and for reinstalling it if you remove it.

Delete the GlobalAdviseSearch Profile, the app, and browser extension. You should restart your Mac. After removing the adware, your proxy settings should be fixed now, but check them just in case – GlobalAdviseSearch sets them to Socks.

Finally, after all the malware is gone, you may want to change any passwords that GlobalAdviseSearch may have seen. It’s not guaranteed that they were stolen, but do it just to be safe.
