Similar to StudyDisplay, TechNetSearch is a program that attacks Mac OS X devices. Its authors indicate that installing the software will essentially improve your browsing experience by providing you with more relevant information that will match your search queries. However, TechNetSearch instead causes a lot of unwanted browser redirection issues. It actually makes you encounter suspicious websites and only then provides you with some search results delivered by Google Search.

TechNetSearch may additionally amend your default search engine settings, so you will obtain the information from Yahoo or Bing instead. Both Yahoo and Bing are legitimate search providers and are not related to the TechNetSearch adware. Even when you have Google as your default search, TechNetSearch will force you to surf the web through these other search engines in contradiction to your own preferences. On top of the search results, you will notice a lot of advertisement banners and sponsored links promoted by means of TechNetSearch.
How does TechNetSearch “improve” your browsing
We have intentionally put the quotation marks to the word “improve” in the header above. Instead of helping you find more relevant information, TechNetSearch actually works in contradiction to its description. Once you submit specific search query through your browser, TechNetSearch first reveals several dubious websites and only then furnishes you with the search results. The application simply intends to cause unwanted browser redirections to its supported pages. This is the typical way how its authors obtain the revenue through infecting your Mac and using its browsers as the platform for displaying ad-supported content.
TechNetSearch additionally shows numerous ads, such as coupons, banners, surveys and questionnaires. They may be placed on top of the websites you visit and thus prevent you from properly reading the required information. However, the main danger of TechNetSearch is in its interconnection with several extremely dangerous resources, for example:
- dubious pages promoting fictitious software updates;
- landing pages of rogue security programs;
- fake AppleCare ProtectionPlan alerts demanding installation of PUPs (potentially unwanted programs);
- numerous surveys and questionnaires that aim to collect your personal details.
Redirections by TechNetSearch to the malicious pages mentioned above occur depending on your regional settings. The adware may investigate your browsing history in order to analyze your search preferences and queries submitted before. This is the direct interference into your privacy, by the way. The information may not only be collected. It may be sold to several third-party companies, including online criminals who may use it for their own illegal purposes.
How to prevent TechNetSearch attack
The investigation shows that TechNetSearch adware for Mac is interconnected with free programs. It is definitely easier to avoid its injection ahead of time than to look for the ways of its effective removal after the adware was mistakenly installed. So, be very careful before you decide to install any free app for your Mac. Take time to carefully read its EULA (End User License Agreement) that will disclose the information about third-party software that may be contained in the bundle. We recommend that you select the “Advanced” or “Custom” installation mode where you may uncheck the additional extra programs from being installed by default.
TechNetSearch additionally creates several obstacles for you to remove it manually. It will function both as the application and the extension in Safari browser. When you attempt to delete the extension, the warning will come that you first need to remove the application. When you access the list of your Mac programs and try to delete TechNetSearch you will get another alert mentioning that you first should remove the extension. We recommend that you scan your Mac with the reliable anti-malware software, such as Combo Cleaner, for complex investigation of your system and removal of all other PUPs that may be in control of your browser.
