Value+ Search Ads - How to remove

When too many ads appear with search results, it’s not always the site being greedy; sometimes, it’s malware. Value+ is a browser extension that, once installed, injects sponsored links into search results. That means that with Value+, Google search results (Value+ only affects Google.com) show additional advertisements at the top of the page. However, because Value+ uses deceptive installation tactics, those whose browsers are compromised might not recognize the problem right away.

What is Value+ malware

Effects

When Value+ is installed, it does not do much to get noticed. It’s there to make money from showing you ads and sponsored links. Its goal is to remain installed for as long as possible, and so Value+’s effects can be a little hard to notice at first.

In general, no more than four ads appear on top of Google’s search results. Most of the time, it’s less. But with an adware infection like Value+, more ads appear at the top. These ads tend to be different, too. They include things like:

  • links to fake search engines (Zapmeta, Info.com, Kensaq.com, etc.) that show even more ads,
  • links to the installation pages for browser hijackers (like Easy Games Tab),
  • ads for clickbait sites (that also have more ads than content),
  • potentially dangerous sites that trick you into downloading malware (like rogue security programs).

Products that are deemed too unsafe, vulnerable to being abused, controversial, or bad for user experience tend to be banned from most mainstream advertising networks. This includes some adult sites, some gambling ads, links to scams and malware, and ad arbitrage (ads that open pages that are filled with more ads). It’s up for Value+ and similar adware to pick up the slack.

So, not only do the victims of Value+ have their time and screen space wasted by unnecessary ads, but those ads are also potentially unsafe and harmful.

Value+ has over 4000 users on the Chrome web store.

Installation

Value+ does not reveal its developers, but considering that its Chrome Web Store page borrows screenshots from Access+ and that it’s so similar to it, MoreResults, and ResultsAdder, all these extensions must be related.

Value+ can dome bundled with a free program downloaded off of the internet. You might be familiar with this: while installing a newly downloaded program (or updating it), one of the screens has an offer next to a ticked checkmark. Leaving it ticked allows the installation of additional software. Bundling is too often abused to spread potentially unwanted programs.

But you can also get Value+ after seeing an ad for it online. Some ads say that installing Value+ will support the site that shows this ad. Other ads just automatically start Value+’s installation. It can trick people into thinking that they must install Value+, which is not true at all.

How to remove Value+

It’s easy enough to have an antivirus program, such as Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, or others, scan your computer for malware. Not just for Value+, but any other adware infections that could be lurking.

If you want, you can manually remove Value+ from your browser, it should be easy enough. Step-by-step instructions for removing extensions are in the next section, with screenshots. But, you can also just remove extensions by right-clicking their icons and choosing the Remove option in the pop-up menu. The extension icons should be visible in your web browser, at the top right corner; if they’re not visible, try putting your cursor to the right of the address bar and then dragging into the left.

Finally, it’s important to secure your web browsing to avoid Value+ and similar infections in the future. You could use an anti-malware program that has web protection. That means that many malicious sites would be blocked (though not all – they’re impossible to keep track of!). Another possibility, cheaper but not as good, is using ad-blockers, which also try to block malicious websites.

Overall, browser extensions have a lot of power over our web browsers, so it’s important to keep track of them. If you think that your web browser is behaving unusually, extensions are the first thing to investigate.
