Radman ransomware - How to remove

The .radman extension belongs to files that have been encrypted by the Radman virus. Radman locks files and attempts to extort the victim of money. The virus does indeed block access to most user-created files (it leaves system files alone) and the decryption key which is required to decrypt the files is only known to the developers of Radman.

Radman belongs to the DJU/STOP ransomware family. This strain of ransomware has been active for a few months — since around the start of 2019. New versions are released all the time, and the developers have not been caught so far.

How ransomware infects computers

It’s very important to determine how exactly Radman infected your computer, then make sure that it doesn’t happen in the future.

Downloading malicious files from the internet can result in a Radman ransomware infection. These could be files hosted on a page that malicious ads directed you to, or maybe files that you torrented. Software cracks for commercial applications are especially risky. Bundles that are attached to freeware might also carry ransomware. Bundled programs are programs that are installed alongside the main product, and almost any application can pay to be included in a bundle.

One of the most popular ways that ransomware spreads is through infected email attachments. Malicious spam campaigns are sent out to a mass of people, and though only a few end up infected, that’s still a win for the developers of Radman.

Radman could also be brought in by a previously installed Trojan. If you had a Trojan on your system, it could have been stealing private information, as well as using your computer’s resources to, for example, send out malicious emails.

Details about the Radman virus

The virus can first be recognized by the new file extensions on encrypted files: .radman. Trying to open these files does not work, renaming the file does not fix it.

Radman also creates a ransom note, called _readme.txt (different ransomware infections almost always leave ransom notes and name them “readme”, “how to fix files” and similarly), which has the same text as the other DJVU viruses, like Kroput and Refols. Email addresses are provided, trying to get the victim to contact the extortionists. A payment of $490 is demanded, with the threat that the price will rise to $980 if the victim of Radman encryption delays the contact for too long.

How to remove Radman ransomware

It’s not advisable to contact Radman developers. Online extortionists are notoriously unreliable and, since they’re criminals, there is no mechanism to protect the victims’ files and money. Even if they can restore the files, and after getting the money, ransomware developers sometimes ask for even more payments. The best way to be safe against ransomware is to be prepared for it and have a backup of the whole system, or at least the most important files. The backup should be stored separately from the computer, like in the cloud.

First of all, it’s important to scan your computer for any malware. Radman might have introduced other viruses, and they all should be caught before they can do any harm. Versions of STOP ransomware have distributed powerful spyware. Use a reliable antivirus program, for example, Spyhunter, or another application that you trust. Radman can mess with Windows Defender and other antivirus programs’ settings. If you find yourself unable to access some websites, try looking at your hosts file, as Radman could have edited it, too.

After making sure there’s no malware remaining on your machine, you can finally restore your files. If you don’t have a backup, try performing a System Restore. If this does not work, you can also try recovering deleted files using data recovery software.

The Radman-encrypted files are not malware, so they’re safe to keep. There is a person developing a decryptor for DJVU files, so it’s worth keeping any encrypted that you weren’t able to recover. You can download the decryptor but, as Radman is still new, it’s not likely to work for you at this time.

Step 2. Complete removal of Radman ransomware

After restoring your system, it is recommended to scan your computer with an anti-malware program, like Spyhunter and remove all malicious files related to Radman. You can check other tools here.

Step 3. Restore Radman ransomware affected files using Shadow Volume Copies

If you do not use System Restore option on your operating system, there is a chance to use shadow copy snapshots. They store copies of your files that point of time when the system restore snapshot was created. Usually Radman tries to delete all possible Shadow Volume Copies, so this methods may not work on all computers. However, it may fail to do so. Shadow Volume Copies are only available with Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. There are two ways to retrieve your files via Shadow Volume Copy. You can do it using native Windows Previous Versions or via Shadow Explorer. a) Native Windows Previous Versions Right-click on an encrypted file and select PropertiesPrevious versions tab. Now you will see all available copies of that particular file and the time when it was stored in a Shadow Volume Copy. Choose the version of the file you want to retrieve and click Copy if you want to save it to some directory of your own, or Restore if you want to replace existing, encrypted file. If you want to see the content of file first, just click Open.
Previous version
b) Shadow Explorer It is a program that can be found online for free. You can download either a full or a portable version of Shadow Explorer. Open the program. On the left top corner select the drive where the file you are looking for is a stored. You will see all folders on that drive. To retrieve a whole folder, right-click on it and select “Export”. Then choose where you want it to be stored.

Step 4. Use Data Recovery programs to recover Radman ransomware encrypted files

There are several data recovery programs that might recover encrypted files as well. This does not work in all cases but you can try this:
  • We suggest using another PC and connect the infected hard drive as slave. It is still possible to do this on infected PC though.
  • Download a data recovery program.
  • Install and scan for recently deleted files. Data Recovery Pro
Note: In many cases it is impossible to restore data files affected by modern ransomware. Thus I recommend using decent cloud backup software as precaution. We recommend checking out Carbonite, BackBlaze, CrashPlan or Mozy Home.
