ProductManualsGuide New Tab - How to remove

ProductManualsGuide looks like a nice and practical application but it also has a few issues: some security experts consider it adware and a browser hijacker. It’s a typical Mindspark product.

ProductManualsGuide isn’t a big issue because it doesn’t necessarily pose a direct threat unless you’re someone who cares a lot about internet privacy. But it’s still advisable to look for a safer way to browse your product manuals since ProductManualsGuide uses some dubious methods to promote itself and exists primarily to boost the userbase of the MyWay search engine.

The MyWay and Ask search engines have been promoted by various browser hijackers for years: MyWay, CryptoPriceSearch, EverydayLookup, and many others. These add-ons has had some effort put into them, such as real-time weather reports, quick links to a few popular sites, and a clock. They also all look nearly the same, the design recycled to the point where it’s hard to tell Mindspark’s New Tab extensions apart.

Issues with ProductManualsGuide

ProductManualsGuide has the typical features of a browser hijacker:

  • Abililty to track what you do online.
  • Access to your browsing history.
  • Can display notifications to you.
  • Can manage your downloads and extensions.

These and more, such as a lack of substantial user reviews, lack of developer transparency, and being promoted by misleading ads online, all show that ProductManualsGuide is not a very honest browser extension. The power it has over your browser goes beyond what a new tab replacer should need, but it does enable ProductManualsGuide to display you pop-up ads, inject ads into sites where they don’t belong, and tailor them to you depending on your profile.

Those reasons might be partly why so many antimalware tools usually detect ProductManualsGuide as suspicious, though there are more.

Other reasons include the bad reputation of the developer — Mindspark likes to bundle its products with freeware, as well as bundle other extensions with its own installations. For example, installing ProductManualsGuide on Chrome will most likely result in Ask and possibly some other add-ons installed on your browser.

Bundling is difficult for inexperienced users to navigate because the options to refuse aren’t clear enough and it’s not obvious that this is a new application. Not to mention that sometimes the bundled applications are installed whether or not you refuse them. Here’s an example of Ask being prompted during the ProductManualsGuide installation. Look at that miniature “No Thanks” next to the giant and bright “START DOWNLOAD”:

Ask bundling alert

Bundling is effective at installing unwanted programs, which is why it’s one of the ways that ProductManualsGuide makes it onto people’s computers, too. Potentially unwanted programs like it are installed alongside intentionally downloaded free applications — if you used an unreliable website to download your program. That’s why it’s worth having an antivirus installed that detects low-reputation programs and warns you about them.

How to remove ProductManualsGuide

There are better ways to access your favorite product manual sites than using the quicklinks provided by ProductManualsGuide:

  • You don’t even need an extension to save websites for quick access, as features that allow that are already built into most browsers.
  • Searching the web without having your queries be handled by ProductManualsGuide is a little faster.
  • Your private data will not be exposed to quite so many companies (though it’s unrealistic to expect complete privacy online).
  • You will be able to actually customize your default search engine to one with fewer ads since ProductManualsGuide injects some promoted content into its results (MyWay results are “enhanced by Google” — they’re mostly the same as Google’s but some queries display vastly more ads when searched through ProductManualsGuide).
  • You can finally customize your new tab page without ProductManualsGuide overriding it.

If you decide to remove ProductManualsGuide, that usually needs to be done manually, but before that, scan your computer with Spyhunter (PC), Combo-Cleaner (Mac), or another professional anti-malware program to see if any programs on your computer might interfere with the removal. Some people try to remove browser hijackers, only to see them return within days thanks to malware on their computer.
