MyFunCards Hijacker - How to remove

MyFunCards is an online website that hosts thousands of greeting cards for many occasions. Ecards can be a nice thing to do for a loved one or a friend, so it’s obvious why MyFunCards is such a popular extension. Unfortunately, the extension has some issues which lead it to be classified as a browser hijacker, such as forcing the users to search the Web using the MyWay search engine, reading your browsing history, or bundling the Ask toolbar.

So, despite the joyous presentation of MyFunCards, not every user is a happy customer. Based on the reviews, ads and pop-ups plague the users, as well as the lack of clear removal options. Some of the reviews are outdated, and, by now, the popular browsers have curbed some of the ways in which extensions can be malicious and annoying. But dishonest developers still find ways to breach users’ privacy and hijack browsers.

MyFunCards was developed by Mindspark, a company that has quite a few hijackers under the belt: FreeShoppingTool, FreePDFCombiner, Flight Search — they span many different subjects, but all are very similar: they set a specific new tab page and include on it a search bar that links to their own search engine. Such a change to their browser is distressing to a lot of people — we use Web browsers all the time, and a sudden unnecessary change is…bad.

Is MyFunCards dangerous?

In some ways, MyFunCards is potentially harmful, but it is not directly dangerous at all. The extension can be found using the same distribution as more malicious software, spying on users unnecessarily, and modifying the browser in unwelcome ways. Rather than dangerous, MyFunCards is somewhats inconvenient and not user-friendly.

The extension promises to configure your new tab page to provide access to thousands of eCards, smileys, and picture editing — but it simply changes your new tab page. This page has a few links to a certain website which is the actual source of all of MyFunCards’ promised functionality. The extension acts as a toolbar that stores a few links. This design is very outdated and not especially useful to the people who installed MyFunCards.

So, why does MyFunCards use this subpar design? It allows them to plop a search bar in the middle of the page. This search bar is very convenient, unfortunately, it directs your search queries not to your favorite search engine, but to MyWay. The search results of this engine are often filled with ads, which means that MyFunCards provides its developers with advertising revenue by just thrusting a search bar in the faces of the users of their extensions.

How is MyFunCards installed?

The changes that the extension makes to the browser might be a little annoying, but the actually concerning part of MyFunCards is the way it’s distributed. It shares some of those ways with malware a lot mroe serious than itself, such as malicious ads and redirects.

A portion of users of MyFunCards find it genuinely, through search. If you installed the extension yourself, that’s legitimate. Although MyFunCards is one of the add-ons which sometimes budles unwanted additional add-ons with it, such as the Ask toolbar. This helps MyFunCards solidify the hijacking of the browser because the bundled extensions have supplementary features (MyFunCards is ready to work together with Ask). So, even installing it manually is not very safe.

On the other hand, MyFunCards can itself be installed by bundlers and you probably know how annoying that is: a nearly invisible option to refuse the checked-by-default optional software, and the refusal doen’t always work; before you know it, your browser is hijacked. Spam emails, promotions and redirects by adware viruses, as well as normal ads are used to spread this add-on and get as many users as possible.

It’s problematic that malvertising, adware, bundling, and spam mail are all used for serious malware, such as ransomware, to infect computers. It doesn’t mean that every program using somewhat dishonest distribution is a virus, but it’s worth being suspicious of.
