Macfaster Pro - How to remove

MacFaster Pro is supposed to make Macs run better. However, this app can’t be trusted to do that.

MacFaster Pro is not very harmful, however, it is very unnecessary. MacFaster Pro shows misleading reports and causes unnecessary stress to users. It calls harmless items “issues” that need to be “fixed”. As a result, some cybersecurity vendors consider MacFaster Pro to be misleading and potentially unwanted.

What are the problems with MacFaster Pro?

MacFaster Pro is flagged by antivirus scanners

AppEsteem, a site that flags applications that might engage in risky behavior that could harm consumers, called out MacFaster Pro for detecting harmless items as “issues” that need to be fixed, as well as for trying to display “System Status” as some sort of a gauge, which is just misleading. AppEsteem also had a problem with MacFaster Pro making it hard for users to stop it from running on startup.

When I originally wrote this post, MacFaster Pro’s installer was not flagged by any antivirus scanners. Now, half a year later, that’s changed:

MacFaster Pro's installers get flagged by antivirus programs.

The older installer for MacFaster Pro now gets flagged by 16 scanners on Virustotal.com),while the one I downloaded today only gets detected by 5 programs.

Most of these detections call MacFaster Pro “Potentially Unwanted”. That means that MacFaster Pro is a very mild threat and that you may or may not want to keep it installed on your Mac. It can also mean that MacFaster Pro is not dangerous, but that it may have been installed without your permission.

MacFaster Pro deletes harmless items

MacFaster Pro is supposed to optimize your Mac’s performance. It tries to do this by deleting unnecessary files: logs, cache, cookies, trash, temporary files, downloads, and languages.

Many of these files are indeed unnecessary and, in the situation where there’s very little space left on your computer, freeing up a bit of space on your computer can make it run faster.

However, many of these files that MacFaster Pro looks for are useful. For example, browser cache files and cookies affect your browsing activity. While some cookies are used for advertising, others save your webpage preferences. Cache allows pages to load faster. And yet, MacFaster Pro wants to get rid of it all.

MacFaster Pro is similar to other optimizers, like Mac Optimizer Pro and MacFly Pro, that also delete harmless items just to appear useful.

It claims to improve your performance

Will MacFaster Pro deleting those files improve your Mac’s performance or your privacy? There isn’t always a clear answer. If your Mac barely had any free space left, then yes, deleting some files might help. At the same time, MacFaster Pro running in the background at all times might slow down your Mac.

Either way, your apps will keep creating new cookies and new cache files. So, when MacFaster Pro scans your Mac, it’ll always find new things to complain about. And as MacFaster Pro starts with your login by default, it is able to scan your Mac regularly and find those new items to delete.

Macfaster Pro's description presents it like a very useful tool.

How to remove MacFaster Pro

Use alternatives

Apple has released tools that can find and delete unnecessary items. You can use the Storage Management tool (Support.apple.com) and the Reduce Clutter tool to help you find which files you can remove. In addition, new macOS editions automatically delete duplicate files, unused languages, logs, caches, and other unnecessary files as needed.

Web browsers provide their own tools to help you manage optional files. For example, you can turn off cookies.

Uninstall MacFaster Pro

It’s advisable to uninstall MacFaster Pro according to its instructions. If you have an active subscription to the app, remember to cancel it.

You can also check your computer for other potentially unwanted programs. Review your recently installed apps, scan your Mac with anti-malware tools like Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner, Malwarebytes, and other scanners to check.

This is especially important if you downloaded MacFaster Pro from a site other than its homepage. For example, if you downloaded it from a software repository, it is possible that adware or other potentially unwanted items were bundled with it, as often happens. An anti-malware app should be able to pick up if any potentially unwanted items made it onto your Mac.
