How Getupdats.com takes over notifications It misleads visitors and tricks them into subscribing to Getupdats.com’s ads.

How to disable Getupdats.com ads

If you’re getting unwanted ads from Getupdats.com (or Lp.getupdats.com), all you need to do is to block notifications from Getupdats.com in your browser settings.

After that, you should check your device for malware and if you find suspicious programs, remove them.

Finally, you can use anti-malware programs or an ad blocker to avoid some malicious sites.

Block Getupdats.com ads

Open the settings

There are two ways to open notification settings so that you can block Getupdats.com’s ads. One is by opening the settings yourself:

  • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Edge (Chromium) – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • Firefox – open SettingsPrivacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

Alternatively, you can catch a Getupdats.com ad and click the gear icon or the three-dot button – that will allow you to access notification settings, too.

Block unwanted ads

To be able to show pop-ups in your browser, Getupdats.com’s address is included in the list of sites that are allowed to send notifications to your specific browser. The goal is to move Getupdats.com from the Allowed list to the Blocked list.

Find Getupdats.com (and other sites that you don’t want to spam you with pop-ups), click the button next to it, select “Block” in the drop-down. This tells your browser to reject any new updates from Getupdats.com. You may need to dismiss the pop-ups that were already sent, but once you close them, no new ones will come.

Disable notification prompts

To avoid any more sites hijacking notifications, you can disable notification prompts. This will make it much more difficult for sites like Getupdats.com to worm their way into your browser. You can still manually allow sites to send notifications, but you won’t accidentally allow them.

Delete malicious programs

Just in case, scan your computer with an antivirus program like Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, or others. Malicious programs promote adware and vice-versa, so one infection could indicate more issues.

What does Getupdats.com do?

It shows potentially unwanted ads

First of all, Getupdats.com is an advertising site. It’s funny – ads are used by websites as a monetization tool. Free websites make money by displaying ads and, in exchange, they offer valuable content (cool articles, web apps, etc.). Getupdats.com, though? It offers no content at all, it’s just advertising spam.

The ads that Getupdats.com shows are the type that are rejected by many sites and ad networks for being too risky:

  • Fake celebrity endorsements of various cryptocurrency trading scams (Worldwide-breakingnews.com). They are legitimately dangerous ads.
  • Adult games and chatting services. The chatting services especially tend to be overpriced.
  • Potentially unregulated supplements and medicines.
  • Computer optimizers and shady antivirus programs.
  • Phishing scams and subscription scams (fake giveaways and sweepstakes).

Not all the ads that Getupdats.com shows are dangerous, but on average, they’re more harmful than ads on mainstream websites. Be careful of them. We recently wrote about a fake security warning – Google Chrome Blocked – this is the sort of thing you need to watch out for.

It hijacks notification settings

Another problem with Getupdats.com/Lp.getupdats.com is that, to be able to spam its ads to people’s browsers, it has to trick people. Here’s how it does this:

  • Getupdats.com is advertised online, mostly on sites that allow unexpected pop-up ads. Getupdats.com opens in a new browser tab.
  • Once open, Getupdats.com shows a notification prompt to allow/block notifications. It then asks you to click “allow”.
  • Getupdats.com lies about what the “allow” button does. It pretends that it’s about an age check, a robot check, media playback permission, etc.
  • Some users who are unfamiliar with extensions follow Getupdats.com’s instructions and accidentally subscribe to its advertisements.

Getupdats.com is one of many notification spammer sites. Other examples include Very-important.online, Click-to-read.online, Install.notify-service.com, and others. These sites promote each other, so when you’re blocking the ads from one, make sure to check for the others.
