GenieoNews is a news aggregator that can be used as a browser add-on. This extension adds a page that includes a search bar, some versions also have a news feed. GenieoNews has a few different versions, they sort of act like browser hijackers, even get detected by many anti-malware programs as potentially harmful.

If you use GenieoNews intentionally and are happy with it, that’s great — as long as you’re aware of the fact that the program makes money the same way other hijackers, by redirecting your traffic and advertising to you.

Anyone who did not intentionally install this program, though, should be concerned about malware on their computers. There’s a possibility of adware and bad ads being used to spread GenieoNews, which can later expose you to actually serious malware if they’re allowed to interfere with your browsing.

What does GenieoNews do?

GenieoNews, or Genieo News, is a browser extension — a little program that modifies and enhances the behavior of a browser. Since browsers are incredibly powerful and manage how one will interact with the web, add-ons are also pretty powerful because they can interfere with some of those interactions. Many of them can watch everything you do online, as well as change how your browser behaves.

GenieoNews has a few different versions. One replaces your home page, another one doesn’t, some have a news feed and a search bar, another version is a generic search site with no news feed at all. You can use the provided search bar for browsing, all it does is send your queries to a specific site in which some ads are displayed in the search results. You can’t choose which search site GenieoNews sends you to, but mine sent me to Yahoo (a choice for a lot of browser hijackers, actually — Search4musix, Forms Hub App, QuickMail, others)

Genieo News is a sibling of Genieo Search, an older search hijacker that’s still used by thousands of people. That one also uses Yahoo.

How to remove GenieoNews

GenieoNews (the browser extension) spreads with other free programs and is installed together with them, without properly asking the user’s permission. Bad ads also promote the add-on, and they might show up thanks to adware. So, removing GenieoNews requires not just changing browser settings, but also checking if there’s malware on your computer.

First, you can remove the GenieoNews extension manually by simply opening your browser, going to the settings, then finding Genieo News and any related add-ons and disabling or removing them. Genieo has add-on for multiple different browsers, the instructions for each one are below this article.

After that, scan your computer with a reputable anti-malware, such as Combo Cleaner for Mac or SpyHunter for PC, to detect and remove malware. After all, if adware’s been opening unwanted browser windows, they need to be removed or they’ll continue causing problems.

Besides that, it’s important to look at your browsing habits. You might be needlessly exposing yourself to bad ads by regularly visiting shady websites. If you often experience new tabs opening, random redirects, ads that are disguised as site content, then it might be time to look for safer alternatives.

How to remove GenieoNews.com using Windows Control Panel

Many hijackers and adware like GenieoNews New Tab install some of their components as regular Windows programs as well as additional software. This part of malware can be uninstalled from the Control Panel. To access it, do the following.

• Start→Control Panel (older Windows) or press Windows Key→Search and enter Control Panel and then press Enter (Windows 8, Windows 10).
• Choose Uninstall Program (if you don't see it, click in the upper right next to "View by" and select Category).
• Go through the list of programs and select entries related to GenieoNews.com . You can click on "Name" or "Installed On" to reorder your programs and make GenieoNews New Tab easier to find.
• Click the Uninstall button. If you're asked if you really want to remove the program, click Yes.
• In many cases anti-malware programs are better at detecting related parasites, thus I recommend installing Spyhunter to identify other programs that might be a part of this infection.

How to remove GenieoNews.com from macOS

Delete GenieoNews New Tab from your applications.

1. Open Finder.
2. In the menu bar, click Go.
3. Select Applications from the dropdown.
4. Find the GenieoNews.com app.
5. Select it and right-click it (or hold the Ctrl and click the left mouse button).
6. In the dropdown, click Move to Bin/Trash. You might be asked to provide your login password.

• Click on Chrome’s menu button (three horizontal lines) and select Settings.
  
• Scroll to the end of the page and click on the Reset settings button.
  
• Click on the Reset button on the confirmation box.

• Click on the menu button on the top right corner of a Mozilla window and select the “Add-ons” icon (or press Ctrl+Shift+A on your keyboard).
  
• Go through Extensions and Addons list, remove everything GenieoNews.com related and items you do not recognise. If you do not know the extension and it is not made by Mozilla, Google, Microsoft, Oracle or Adobe then you probably do not need it.
  

(Optional) Reset your browser’s settings If you are still experiencing any issues related to GenieoNews New Tab, reset the settings of your browser to its default settings.

• Click on the menu button on the top right corner of a Mozilla Firefox window. Click on the Help button.
  
• Choose Troubleshooting Information on the Help menu.
  
• Click on the Reset Firefox button.
  
• Click on the Reset Firefox button on the confirmation box. Mozilla Firefox will close and change the settings to default.

How to remove GenieoNews New Tab from Microsoft Edge:Top

• Click on the menu button on the top right corner of a Microsoft Edge window. Select “Extensions”.

• Go through the extensions list and remove programs you do not need, especially similar to GenieoNews.com. Click on the "Remove" icon next to GenieoNews New Tab or other add-ons you want to remove.

• Press on the “Remove” button on the Confirmation window.

• If unsure, you can disable them temporarily.

• Restart Microsoft Edge.
