What is FunctionLogInput?

How FunctionLogInput is installed

FunctionLogInput is an app and a browser extension that might appear unexpectedly on your Mac. FunctionLogInput is one of many Mac adware infections. It’s similar to OriginalModuled, OperativeMachinedSearchLeadingInfo, etc.

These apps don’t ask users to install them. They can’t even be downloaded from the internet intentionally.

Instead, FunctionLogInput and similar apps use malicious advertisements – mostly pop-ups with fake software update alerts – to infect Macs. Malicious adware bundles may be disguised as macOS updates, Flash Player installers, and other trusted apps. In reality, they impersonate these trusted apps in order to install malicious adware apps.

Free apps downloaded from iffy websites may also be bundled with adware such as FunctionLogInput.

As a result of all this, FunctionLogInput gets installed on Macs without users’ permission. It looks as if FunctionLogInput appears out of nowhere.

FunctionLogInput uses an icon of a green and blue magnifying glass.

How FunctionLogInput hijacks browsers

Once FunctionLogInput is installed, it makes some changes to browser settings.

For example, it may cause your browser to open unexpected sites. When searching the web, you might find yourself on Yahoo.com, Searchmarquis.com, Safefinder, etc. These sites aren’t necessarily dangerous, but being forced to use an unwanted search engine is not fun.

It’s also not good for privacy. Random websites being able to read your search history can feel unsettling. Though the one with the most access to your data is FunctionLogInput itself. It may be able to read your data on all the sites you visit and inject content like ads into those sites. While the risk of having your data stolen is present with many browser extensions, FunctionLogInput is actually, demonstrably malicious.

FunctionLogInput and similar apps are trying to show people ads and force them to visit affiliated websites. It’s probably to boost those sites’ traffic and ad revenue, helping them make money. But the shenanigans of these adware apps sometimes have unintended effects:

  • slow on no internet connection,
  • some apps crash or lag,
  • multiple unknown apps or browser add-ons are installed without your permission.

How to delete FunctionLogInput

FunctionLogInput can be a little frustrating to delete as it might return after being removed, or it might refuse to be removed. If this happens, it’s because of files and settings that FunctionLogInput uses to achieve persistence – reinstall itself after being deleted. Those settings and files need to be deleted together with the FunctionLogInput app to keep it off for good.

Below are instructions for deleting adware manually. Follow them to check startup items, profile configurations, and network settings. Adware infections commonly manipulate these settings.

Adware infections often spread in groups and it can be difficult to find all the malware yourself. Anti-malware apps like Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner, Malwarebytes, and others can help here. They can find malicious and potentially unwanted items and warn you about them.

To avoid malware like FunctionLogInput, use security software to protect your Mac and/or an ad blocker to stop malicious ads and websites from showing.
