What is OriginalModuled?

OriginalModuled is an adware infection

OriginalModuled is an app that doesn’t seem to do anything. It gets installed without permission and it runs with Safari and other web browsers.

You might first notice OriginalModuled when your Mac warns you about it with this message:

OriginalModuled will damage your computer.

That’s good – macOS detected the OriginalModuled malware.

OriginalModuled is adware. It wants to control how the infected Mac can browse the web. It can set up an unwanted proxy and install browser hijackers. It can open sponsored sites as pop-up ads and inject new banner ads. OriginalModuled can also allow malicious actors to spy on the web browsing activity done on the infected Macs.

The app can also cause various technical problems, like websites not opening and apps freezing and crashing. Internet connection might be spotty. That might not be intentional, but it’s still harmful.

OriginalModuled might use fake Flash player ads to get installed.

How adware infects Macs

OriginalModuled’s name, “Original Module”, is a meaningless set of words that are meant to make it appear less suspicious on your computer. It wants to stay under the radar. But, very likely, it and very similar adware infections (IntialSkilld, AdvancedSprintd) are widespread.

The more people use macOS, the more cybercriminals target them (Mac malware threats are now outpacing attacks on Windows PCs).

There are also other Mac adware viruses, Silver Sparrow, Convuster, and families like AdLoad and Pirrit. Malicious actors are intentionally targeting Mac users, tricking them with fake warnings and deceptive ads. People don’t realize when an app that they downloaded is actually a malware infection.

How to delete OriginalModuled

OriginalModuled can be a little complicated to remove. But it should be completely doable for most Mac users, even people who don’t consider themselves “technical”:

  • OriginalModuled and files related to it need to be deleted.
  • You also need to check if any other malicious apps are on your device.
  • Finally, you can review your settings (configuration profiles, proxies, default search engine) and change them as needed, undoing OriginalModuled’s harm.

Below are the instructions for starting your Mac in safe mode, which can help remove OriginalModuled and other malware more effectively.

It’s helpful to scan your Mac with an anti-malware app, such as Combo Cleaner or Malwarebytes, and see what they find. Adware apps sometimes download and install other (sometimes even identical!) adware, so OriginalModuled might not be the only threat on your device. Plus, scanners might be able to catch something that you might miss.

After OriginalModuled is gone, remove any traces that it might have left. Below are also the instructions for checking your browser settings. Check your browser extensions and remove potentially unwanted items. Also, check your default search engine setting and your new tab page setting.

Since OriginalModuled adware logs user data, it’s advisable to reset your passwords and to make sure that you’re using multi-factor authentication where it’s available.
