Email Search Tools Redirect - How to remove

Email Search Tools is a browser extension that allows people to quickly open a specific email page. It also changes your default search engine settings to make Yahoo show you your search results.

This add-on often gets installed together with another browser extension. It tags along with another browser hijacker, which already uses misleading ads, so none of it is nice.

However, Email Search Tools cannot be called malicious. It’s just an arguably useless browser extension that can open your email provider’s website if you click on its icon and it also changes your search engine.

But because it gets installed using deceptive methods and it behaves like a browser hijacker, it can’t be called save, either. That’s why 17 of 70 engines on VirusTotal have a problem with Email Search Tools.

Email Search Tools is similar to ISportTV, SearchLetter, Search4musix, and other browser extensions that modify how the search bar behaves.

What Email Search Tools does

Email Search Tools is a browser add-on that’s supposed to help you open your email provider’s website very quickly – nevermind that it doesn’t allow you to choose freely which email provider you use or how easy it is to save links for quick access without using a third-party browser add-on.

The permissions that Email Search Tools requires on Google are such:

  • Read and change your data on all emailsearchtools.com sites
  • Read your browsing history
  • Change your search settings to: search.emailsearchtools.com
  • Manage your apps, extensions, and themes

So, you might use Email Search Tools for the quick email access, but this add-on gets access to your browsing history, your list of extensions, and it sets your default search engine to Yahoo. These unnecessary privileges that Email Search Tools gets are useful for targeted advertising and could make the extension more lucrative and it’s up to each user if they think the service that the add-on provides is worth it.

How browser hijackers spread

On Chrome browsers, Email Search Tools has been installed by over 56 thousand users. If the add-on is as useless as I say it is, why do so many people use it?

In my experience, Email Search Tools is offered bundled with other browser hijackers, like Search Hub and Encrypted Search. These browser extensions complement each other: while one takes over your omnibar, another one changes your new tab page, and yet another one redirects you from other search engine sites. So while individually these add-ons are nothing special, all together they make a powerful browser hijacker.

One way that hijackers get offered is by misleading ads — and this applies to Email Search Tools, too. The ads use vague language, deceptive design, and manipulative user interface to get as many people as possible to install their add-ons:

  • Big, bright confirmation buttons and the way to quit the installation is obscured
  • Automatic redirects that give the impression that the installation of the extension is ongoing (when actually multiple extensions are being installed)
  • Very vague descriptions of the products that don’t always explain that a browser extension is what’s being promoted

Another way that hijackers spread is by being downloaded and installed by another program – it’s called bundling, and it’s a way for free programs to make money: they offer you optional software, like an add-on to change your default search provider, and get a little bit of money every time a user does install the offer (it’s like very aggressive advertising). Some distributors intentionally make the offers very hard to notice – that way, you’re more likely to accidentally install the offer and they’re more likely to get paid.

So, a lot of Email Search Tools users probably don’t even know that they have the extension, which could explain why, of the 50 thousand users, nobody bothered to leave a review or a rating. To most people, the mysterious installation of this add-on would just manifest as having their search queries redirected to Yahoo.

How to remove Email Search Tools

Email Search Tools is probably not the only potentially unwanted extension attached to your browser. Besides that, there are probably some suspicious programs on your computer if you got Email Search Tools installed by a bundler. So, it would be best to scan your computer for PUPs and to review al the browser extensions that you have, then remove everything suspicious. This should improve the security of your computer significantly.

Review the applications that are installed on your computer – look them up online if you’re not sure if they’re safe, if not, then uninstall them manually. Or you can use an anti-malware program that detects PUPs, like Combo Cleaner for Mac or SpyHunter for PC.

Email Search Tools and the other browser hijackers might need to be removed manually, depending on which browser you use. The guide is below – the process is really simple and quick.
