Dailymailtab.com Hijacker - How to remove

A browser hijacker (developed by Hyperconnect Media), Daily Mail Tab sets dailymailtab.com as your new tab page. This page is supposed to help people check they email inboxes faster than before. However, the real goal of Daily Mail Tab is to be able to motenise your browsing by showing you ads in the results page when you search for something using their search bar. With Daily Mail Tab, you’ll see more ads than before.

Check your emails the fast & easy way with Daily Mail Tab. Also, enjoy easy access to web search.

daily mail tab hijacker

Despite Daily Mail Tab’s description, the extension is not actually useful — all that dailymailtab.com has is a few links to popular email service provider websites. Daily Mail Tab has just enough to justify it being an extension.

What are the risks?

Browser hijacking

A browser extension has access to browser settings. Since your browser controls how webpages are displayed to you, Daily Mail Tab could block, replace, and inject content into any website. It would be safest to only install extensions that you trust. Especially when powerful extensions and apps which have security flaws can be abused to make unwanted changes and leak data.

Daily Mail Tab can read your browsing history. This information is useful to marketers who want their ads to be displayed to people who will find them relevant. With this goal, your search queries that you type into dailymailtab.com’s search bar, your browsing habits, and your demographic information are tracked and shared with third parties.

Bundling

Daily Mail Tab also bundles Search Secure with itself. Bundling is often used to smuggle unwanted and dangerous applications into a user’s computer to be installed without them noticing. Daily Mail Tab introduces Search Secure for installation by framing it as the next step of its own installation. This is dishonest and can result in people installing Search Secure even when they don’t want to.

install search secure stealthily

Daily Mail Tab tells us that Search Secure is completely optional. Nevertheless, bundling is seen by many as an ethically dubious practice. PPI (pay per install) incentivises dishonest behaviour like pushing additional software on people, even hiding promoted software and installing it on computers secretly.

Privacy

Another reason to be suspicious: Daily Mail Tab was developed by Hyperconnect Media, who present themselves as a marketing business which helps websites get more traffic and advertisers reach more people. The other products that were developed by this company — Dailyfileconverter.co, MySearchPlus.co, the previously mentioned Searchsecureprime.co —  behave similarly, by only providing the bare minimum of the promised functionality.

Your IP, device information, device activity while using Daily Mail Tab, and, of course, the queries that you submit when using their search bar — all this information can be collected by Daily Mail Tab, and this is according to their Privacy Policy. Daily Mail Tab is likely collecting this data because it is useful to advertisers. Targeted advertising increases the effectiveness of ads, and is more lucrative to everyone, but data about each user is required to tailor ads to each person.

How do browser hijackers get installed?

It’s possible to find some browser hijackers organically. For example, Daily Mail Tab could be found by searching online for “log into email now” or something similar. But that is not how most hijackers are installed.

Often unwanted extensions are included in malware installers and promoted by adware. If you were suggested Daily Mail Tab without searching for it, or if you ended up on dailymailtab.com randomly, without seeking it out — you should probably scan your computer with an antivirus because it’s possible that you have adware on your computer. Adware programs often promote malicious and harmful websites and products by constantly displaying intrusive and annoying ads.

All that Daily Mail Tab does — bundling software, tracking your activity — is not strictly illegal. Most of the information can be found if you read the fine print. But it’s not realistic to ask us to read the Privacy Policy of every new product that we use. It might not be criminal, but Daily Mail Tab is undoubtedly dishonest with its users.

For now, we can at least use the types of antivirus programs that recognise not just viruses, but also PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) and suspicious files and applications.

Remove Daily Mail Tab

You can restore your browser to how it was — just go to the settings and remove Daily Mail Tab and, if you have it, Search Secure. If you allowed notifications from dailymailtab.com, you might want to disable them, too.

You might also want to scan your computer with an antivirus program, like Spyhunter, or another professional application. Some of the worst viruses can even cripple your usual antivirus program, preventing it from functioning correctly, but a newly downloaded app should not have that problem.
