Problems with Click-to-watch.live

Click-to-watch.live is a website that does two main things:

  • it tricks people into subscribing to its notifications,
  • and it advertises potentially dangerous sites.

The result is people seeing potentially harmful ads on their screen and not knowing how to stop them.

How Click-to-watch.live tricks visitors

Click-to-watch.live is advertised on free movie and TV show sites (pirating sites). Ads for it don’t appear in banners, display ads, or overlays. Instead, ads for Click-to-watch.live get triggered when you try to select and watch a video.

Click-to-watch.live ads are images of loading videos accompanied by text lines such as:

  • “Click Allow to close this page”,
  • “Click Allow to access the video”,
  • “Press Allow to prove that you are not a robot”,
  • “Press Allow if you are 18+”.

The Allow button refers to a button in a pop-up that Click-to-watch.live shows in your browser. Clicking it allows Click-to-watch.live to send notifications to your browser.

Because Click-to-watch.live lies about what the Allow button does, it can trick people to allow its notifications unwittingly. People think they need to follow Click-to-watch.live’s instructions because they don’t notice that Click-to-watch.live is an ad – they think they’re still on the video streaming site. Indeed, Click-to-watch.live’s loading videos are just pictures and are entirely fake.

Dangerous advertisements

Once Click-to-watch.live starts spamming your screen with ads, it’s not shy about promoting some really bad sites.

Its pop-ups sometimes lead to Special-offers.online. Special-offers.online itself promotes a lot of malicious sites. It doubles as a clickbait site. Clickbait websites are stuffed with advertisements and have little to no valuable content, they’re pure time wasters.

Click-to-watch.live advertises dubious software, such as TotalAV. It may show you fake virus warnings that try to scare you into buying fake security programs or pay for fake tech support. If a website tries to tell you that you need to download something, be very careful.

Click-to-watch.live also promotes get-rich-quick schemes. Articles about people who got incredibly rich from trading cryptocurrency try to get you to join shady websites, give up your personal information, payment details, everything. Don’t trust these sites or anything that appears too good to be true. Crypto trading scams are everywhere.

The reason that Click-to-watch.live advertises malicious links is that it is not a normal website. Click-to-watch.live has no content, it doesn’t need to protect its users from malware and it doesn’t need to worry about keeping a loyal userbase. Click-to-watch.live worms its way into browsers without asking, it does not need to answer to anyone. That’s why it’s considered malicious.

Click-to-watch.live asks you to allow notifications "to access the video".

How to stop Click-to-watch.live pop-ups

Click-to-watch.live uses web push notifications to display pop-up ads in your browser even when you’re not on the site. You can stop notifications by blocking them in the notification settings of your browser. Open the browser that’s being attacked by Click-to-watch.live’s ads and then find the notifications section:

  • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

Besides Click-to-watch.live, you might see a few other addresses, too. Personal-video.live, Special-offers.online, Check-message.live, etc. They should all be blocked.

Next to each address, there’s a button that brings up a small menu where you can choose to block (or deny) the site. Click it for Click-to-watch.live and click on “Block”. Your browser will move Click-to-watch.live to the list of sites whose notifications are blocked.

It is also advisable to scan your computer with an anti-malware program (Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, other applications) and pay attention to the scan results. If any malicious programs or browser extensions are found, they should be removed.

You may also want to block offers for notifications in your browser, as described in this post on blocking web push notifications.
