Symptoms

You may have noticed an app with the name AdvancedSprint in your Dock. Or a warning by macOS that “AdvancedSprintd will damage your computer”.

One of the possible symptoms of an AdvancedSprintd infection is excessive ads while browsing the web. Maybe your home page was replaced with an unfamiliar website. AdvancedSprintd might also force alternative search engines (SearchMarquis, SearchLee, etc.) on all the web browsers on the infected Mac.

Another possible effect is unstable behavior of online apps – crashing, freezing. Unfamiliar apps might show up from nowhere.

Something that’s less visible but still important – AdvancedSprintd might collect your data, such as your browsing history or even saved login credentials.

Luckily, macOS security catches AdvancedSprintd and warns users about this app. So, AdvancedSprintd might not do any of those malicious things that I listed before macOS stops it and warns you to delete it.

Deleting AdvancedSprintd might not be very simple, though, as this adware infection can be very persistent.

AdvancedSprintd might be distributed with fake updates.

How adware infects Macs

AdvancedSprintd is not unique. It’s one of many malicious apps that target macOS. These app shave names like RecordMapperd, ElementaryTyped, ActivityInputd, ManagerAnalogd, etc. They belong to the AdLoad family of adware.

If AdvancedSprintd shares its distribution tactics with other AdLoad malware, we can guess how it spreads:

  • Deceptive ads – fake software updates.
  • Fake search results and websites infected with malicious redirects.
  • Adware bundles and installers for harmless software infected with adware.

People who download and install AdvancedSprintd don’t do it on purpose. They are tricked by deceptive ads. They might also be tricked by deceptive installation instructions that walk people through getting around macOS’ protections.

Often, the malicious actors who distribute adware and malware use manipulative and deceptive presentation to trick people to download and install malware themselves. Malware is disguised as trustworthy apps coming from trusted companies, as being necessary or even mandatory. Malicious actors basically lie to people to get them to install AdvancedSprintd and other adware.

Anti-malware applications and strict macOS app security settings (Support.apple.com) can help you stay safe. But it’s also important to be careful about what you install and where you download it from. Don’t fall for fake ads and scareware tactics that are so often used by scammers.

How to remove AdvancedSprintd

If you notice strange effects in your browser and if you see warnings from macOS about AdvancedSprintd, then some apps, files, and settings must be lurking on your device. They need to be removed.

You can combine your manual efforts with the help of an anti-malware app to remove all suspicious items and to restore your settings to remove the traces of the AdvancedSprintd adware.

Anti-malware applications, such as Combo Cleaner, Malwarebytes, and others, can detect and remove malicious items. Since malicious files can be masked with unsuspicious names, tucked in the hidden folders among legitimate files. Some anti-malware apps do this for free while others should offer refunds.

You can find those AdvancedSprintd files manually. More importantly, you need to review your settings. Check your profiles, your startup items, and your network settings. Review your browser settings – AdvancedSprintd is likely to have installed a browser add-on or two. The instructions for how to do all this can be found below.
