ActionClassicGames New Tab - How to remove

ActionClassicGames is a somewhat suspicious browser new tab that’s actually a tool for an advertising company to get access to your internet habits. ActionClassicGames changes the homepage of the browser where it’s installed. And not every user who gets ActionClassicGames in their browser.

On one hand, ActionClassicGames is a harmless new tab extension that exists to promote the websites of its developer company.

On the other hand, ActionClassicGames is a search-redirecting, spying newtab virus that uses deception to get installed on thousands of browsers.

ActionClassicGames is a browser hijacker

ActionClassicGames is a browser add-on, a little script that changes the browser when it’s installed. In general, a lot of them are extremely useful. Browser add-ons help people manage their tabs and bookmarks, block ads, and transform their browsing experience.

Extensions are so powerful that you should consider carefully which are trusted enough to be given access to your browser. ActionClassicGames new tab is probably not one of them:

Classification
  • Adware
  • Browser hijacker
Problems with ActionClassicGames
  • Reads your browsing history
  • Stops you from setting your own new tab page
  • Doesn’t always install honestly
Sources of the new tab extension
  • Installed in the background by other newly downloaded programs
  • Advertised by adware and redirect viruses
How to remove ActionClassicGames
  • Delete malicious programs (Combo Cleaner for Mac, SpyHunter for PC)
  • Remove ActionClassicGames and related extensions (like the Ask extension) manually

Disappointingly, what ActionClassicGames does is very little:

  • Change the new tab page.
  • Promote another search website.
  • Read your browsing history.

This checklist clearly shows that ActionClassicGames is a browser hijacker – an extension that’s installed for the sake of watching and controlling the actions of the user. If your homepage and new tab page was changed without your consent and if your web search results are returned on an unusual website, those are clear signs that a browser hijacker got into your browser. These add-ons (NoteHomepage, DirectionsOnline, etc.) are usually meant to promote whatever website the creator of the extension has. In ActionClassicGames’ case, that website is MyWay.com.

To get people interested, the description of ActionClassicGames says “Play hundreds of online games including puzzle, arcade, board games and more – all for FREE”. Of course, it’s a completely separate website that’s doing all the heavy lifting. It’s not unusual for browser extensions to exist purely to prop up a website, that’s not all that shady. But it is more concerning when ActionClassicGames wants to know what you search for online and pushes MyWay.com.

Newtab viruses invade browsers and read people’s search histories to make money from behavioral advertising. If you value your privacy, you should probably know that ActionClassicGames is not great for that.

ActionClassicGames is considered adware and a browser hijacker because those seem to be its main functions. You should avoid ActionClassicGames not only because it is entirely useless, but also because several reputable antivirus tools warn their users about this plugin being problematic.

ActionClassicGames installation

Despite the fact that this new tab is useless, tens of thousands of people still have it in their browsers. Why is that?

The answer is that ActionClassicGames relies on some very aggressive advertising. This also reveals the biggest problem with ActionClassicGames new tab: it uses the same distribution as scams and malware do. This includes drive-by downloads and installation through bundling.

"ActionClassicGames", the homepage on a laptop screen and a virustotal screenshot showing 36 detections

Sometimes, ActionClassicGames is installed without the user’s consent or knowledge. This happens when ActionClassicGames new tab is bundled with a free program and that’s not disclosed clearly enough. This is known as adware bundling and it’s used by many potentially unwanted programs to sneak into computers unnoticed. Any free program on a download site has a chance of carrying a few new tab extensions, search hijackers, or scam utility programs. Install freeware carefully.

You can also get ActionClassicGames online – it’s promoted by the same sites that are seen spreading tech support scams, sweepstakes scams, investment scams, malware, and similar dangerous content. ActionClassicGames’ installation page can pop-up when trying to watch an episode of a show or when downloading a file. If you click on it accidentally, ActionClassicGames can even take over the browser and refuse to let go until it’s installed. This sort of behavior is such a problem that Chrome removed a bunch of extensions from its store a few months ago, but misleading installation tactics seem to persist.

How to remove ActionClassicGames

ActionClassicGames new tab extension is adware and though it is not all that dangerous, it is best to remove it from your browser. You can do that manually by simply following the instructions in the next section.

Stay safe by always installing security fixes when they come out and by closing suspicious websites without interacting with them. Use an antivirus program to scan every file that you downloaded. I recommend that you scan your computer for malware (Combo Cleaner for Mac OS, SpyHunter for Windows) because considering the sorts of distribution methods that ActionClassicGames uses, there could really be some potentially unwanted programs or even adware in your computer.
