How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as Vista Internet Security 2012?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.

I’ve downloaded both Malwarebytes and Spyware Doctor, however when trying to launch either of them I get an error prompt that reads ” Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access item.” Where do I go from here in removing Vista Internet Security 2012?

Michael: try using fake registration code before that. also, run
cacls [Path to program] /G Everyone:F
this should make program accessible again.

I’m irritated! I keep typing “how do you get rid of “stupid” vista security 2012 alert!!” but nothing that really “helps” comes up! And when I try what people say gets rid of it IT DOESN’T FRIKIN WORK! I tried the f8 thing to go into safe mode then rebooting that was crap! Now bleepingcomputer says I should download malawarbytes and that it would actually delete it all! I tried it …it seemed to work for a while. But when I got on the internet 1 hour later that stupid virus came popping back up! Exiting me out of my internet explorer! GOSH ISN’T THERE ANY GOOD HELP AROUND?! If I ever meet the #$%@#$ who created the virus I’m gonna… @#$%&**%$#!!!

    • December 26th, 2011 at 12:14 | #13

Kidversion: Calm down. MBAM might not have trojan downloader in their DB, which re-downloads parasite OR you get reinfected. get Anti-Malware program with real time protection, not remover only.

I used the code a couple of weeks ago, but it appears to have affected my Task manager to the point where it will not open. I have to run all my programs as administrator. I still see that win 7 home security 2012 is still on my system. How do I get rid of it permanently. Please help!

I got hit with it 3 days after christmas at work, and I did ALL the above steps, and thus far I am having no more problems. I am currently running a full scan with the malwarebytes..soo we will see what happens..but at least when I rebooted out of safe mode the “security” icon was no longer in the task bar by my clock. I am hoping that is a good sign. It was nice having a second laptop on the premisis to find this information. Thank you soo much for your services.

Update Spyware Doctor, contact their support in case of upldated version of Vista Internet Security – you do not need safe mode if you CAN install programs.

SKC download on other PC and move using usb drive TDSS Killer from kaspersky’s page. Scan with it. Check if proxy server is present on your browser, disable it.

Hi admin.. I scanned with TDSS and there were no threats found. I have since ran malwarebytes anti malware on my laptop as well and it found many threats which I quarantined. On CMD prompt when I run ipconfig command there is no ‘default gateway’ listed! is there any other way I can let it find a gateway!? many thanks

    • January 2nd, 2012 at 23:46 | #22

SCK . Default gateway depends on your network configuration, usually same as your IP except the last number. You should edit your TCP/IP protocol settings.

I have this same malware in my computer. These types of malware won’t let you download any protection. Some won’t even let u go on the internet. I had a bad one in the pass, that did the same thing.I had a extra computer so I went and download a virus protector , off the good computer and I download it on my Ipod ,then I connect my ipod to the bad computer, then I downloaded the program on to my bad computer ,I was able to install the program and get rid of the virus.going to try doing it again, hopefully this works.

I had this happen to my laptop twice in the past week … as always, I cursed in annoyance and reset my system to the last point of system restore — it has always worked for me and, of course, I kept a mental note as to what sites to avoid now.

But just in case, I will dl spydoc … thanks for this very informative article!

Try MBAM / Hitman pro too.
