How to remove Vista Home Security 2012?

June 7th, 2011

What is Vista Home Security 2012?

Vista Home Security 2012 is a new creation by computer hackers, a rogue antispyware program that infiltrates into computers with a help of a Trojan virus and once inside, imitates being an antivirus program while in fact has nothing to offer. As you see from its name, Vista Home Security 2012 can infect exclusively those computer system that run Windows Vista Operating system. However, if you have other OS running, don’t think you are safe – scamware will change its name as well, just like other members of this dangerous family of rogue anti-spywares.

The program is launched with each system reboot. Vista Home Security 2012 simulates performing system scan and then reports to detect tons of infections on the system. After that, it offers purchasing a full version of Vista Home Security 2012 and promises that this will help to remove all detected threats.

Additionally, you will receive tons of security notifications and a bunch of pop up ads which will not only provide with false information about your system’s security but also promote Vista Home Security 2012 as a security tool. All messages claiming that your computer is under attack are fake and the only badware on your system is Vista Home Security 2012 itself. To make you concerned about your machine, these threats claim:

Manual Vista Home Security 2012 removal

Important Note: Although it is possible to manually remove Vista Home Security 2012, such activity can permanently damage your system if any mistakes are made in the process, as advanced spyware parasites are able to automatically repair themselves if not completely removed. Thus, manual spyware removal is recommended for experienced users only, such as IT specialists or highly qualified system administrators. For other users, we recommend using Spyware Doctor or other malware and spyware removal applications found on 2-viruses.com.
Remove these Vista Home Security 2012 Registry Entries:
Remove these Vista Home Security 2012 files:
It is impossible to list all file names and locations of modern parasites. You can identify remaining parasites, other Vista Home Security 2012 infected files and get help in Vista Home Security 2012 removal by using free Spyware Doctor scanner. It comes with free real-time protection module that helps preventing Vista Home Security 2012 and similar threats.

Vista Home Security 2012 is classified as Rogue Anti-Spyware. After infecting a user’s system, it proceeds to scare its victim into buying the “product” by displaying fake security messages, stating that your computer is infected with spyware and only Vista Home Security 2012 can help you to remove it after you download the trial version. As soon as the victim downloads Vista Home Security 2012 trial version, it pretends to scan your computer and shows a grossly exaggerated amount of non-existent errors. Then, Vista Home Security 2012 offers to buy the full version to fix these false errors. If the user agrees, Vista Home Security 2012 does not only fix the errors, but it also takes the user’s money and may even install additional spyware into the victim’s computer.

Some Rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Vista Home Security 2012, may offer users to buy it after the victim clicks on a banner or a pop-up while surfing the internet. Usually, a Trojan is installed to a victim’s computer after clicking on the advertisement. It then proceeds to download or even install Vista Home Security 2012, which is another way for Rogue Anti-Spyware to spread itself.

Most of rogue Anti-Spyware, such as Vista Home Security 2012, is nearly impossible to remove manually.

How to tell if your PC has been infected by a Rogue Anti-Spyware such as Vista Home Security 2012?

Numerous undesirable and annoying pop-ups: A typical Rogue Anti-Spyware parasite keeps track of your internet browsing habits, sending your browsing history data to remote servers, owned by third party companies that use this information to advertise their products via numerous pop-ups, toolbars, hijacked homepages and spam letters. All these undesirable advertising methods are used on the victims of Rogue Anti-Spyware.
Changed or new icons: Sometimes, Rogue Anti-Spyware installs unwanted software to a victim’s PC without user’s knowledge and consent. This may lead to slower PC performance and stability, as well as more unwanted programs you can't remove.

This virus has hit my computer and blocked me from going to any websites. It is just saying Visiting This Site May Pose a Security Threat To Your System.

Jim: enter the registration key. Download process explorer, launch it from usb drive (if you can download on other PC ) , disable 3-letter processes from %appdata% or %temp%, try downloading programs then.

I downloaded the spyware doctor and detected the threats and virus…to remove them i need to purchase the program?

    • June 19th, 2011 at 09:41 | #7

Lori: if you want, expand each of the detections and delete them from hard disk manually. SD shows full location to parasite files. I would recommend geting SD for protection against such infections in the future.
You can try other removers as well.

MalwareBytes is free and does a fine job …. AVG free will remove the infected exe file and the process …. good luck.

    • June 22nd, 2011 at 23:42 | #10

      Scrappy:
AVG (both free and paid version) messes up PC when removing this parasite often. It fails to fix registry entries that prevent .exe execution, and leaves PC unusable ( one has to download registry fixes). Read comments under parasites in this family.
Malwarebytes is ok against this parasite.

I have this virus and I installed spybot and it scanned my pc and after that i removed all the detected files but then it couldnt remove the registry keys? because im not the admin :=( so what can I do? I did read all the other comments but they didnt help because i dont understand them properly.

    • June 27th, 2011 at 09:07 | #17

Some registry keys are harmless, some are not. Reboot. If you can execute .exe files and your antivirus launches, I would ask admin to run a scan in convenient for him time. If not… well, then admin needs to scan PC faster :)

    • June 27th, 2011 at 18:25 | #21

Asghar: you can fake register with that code Vista Home Security 2012. Then it will think you have paid for it, and stop buggering with popups. Scan with SD, Malwarebytes afterwards, and delete files they find. If you wish, you can do that manually.

When asked for a registration key, try this: 2233-298080-3424. What this should do (from what Admin has been trying to tell you) is that it’ll fool the application to think it’s registered and shouldn’t bother you while you try to remove it.

When prompted to register, do as “Night” says. I entered the reg key given, which worked ! I was then able to remove Vista Security 2012 with SD and Malwarebytes Anti Malware. Thanks Night !!

the vista home security 2012 virus has attacked my computer. luckily I have another one at my disposal to use the interet to try to find a way to remove it. I have started the task manager and there aren’t any 3 letter processes to end. I believe I have successfully used the fake registration code to keep the popups to a minimum, but when I try to go to a website to download a removal tool the page is either blank or the computer shuts down. what do I do?

    • July 25th, 2011 at 21:13 | #34

Anna: Try changing date to the further one (aprox a week after infection started) or use usb drive to install anti-malware programs

This stupid program pops up non-stop and of course,I googled it before even thinking about clicking anything and it says it’s a virus. I can’t pay for SD,so where are the files located and what files are they so I can delete them? I have not downloaded/bought the VHS 2012. I also ran McAffee for any virus and it says my computer is protected still,so I know it’s not locked up…yet.

I have spyware doctor and scanned and it says it found the infected files but that I cannot remove them without purchasing. Somebody was instructed by the admin to open up the location and delete the files manually. However, the locations of the files do not exist on my computer….so how am I supposed to delete them manually?

    • December 3rd, 2011 at 14:47 | #50

Lau: if it is detected, it exists. Copy path to malware files ( everything, except last sequence of symbols.exe ) Paste this into explorer PATH (not internet explorer, file explorer). It will open malware folder. This folder is hidden.

  37. Lau
    December 4th, 2011 at 00:50 | #51

What if the path is just a bunch of websites because it says it is adware and spyware?

Lau: These can be left behind. Look for executables.

    • December 17th, 2011 at 00:12 | #64

Terry: disable proxy in your browser, scan your PC with TDSS Killer (from kaspersky) and couple of anti-malware programs. Delete what they find. Then run CCleaner.
      System restore is not necessary.

  46. Dan
    December 18th, 2011 at 03:42 | #65

I got rid of this nasty thing after reading a whole bunch of techniques (like those mentioned here) and have a few observations. It seems likely that one solution that may be good is to run a virus identifier program that both finds this particular virus AND deletes it from your machine. My machine is running Vista but apparently the program just adapts to whatever windows OS you have and call itself, for example, XP Security etc. 2012. I did not find one that would do this for free. I downloaded Spy Doctor (using another machine, namely, my laptop) and copied it to my infected machine. The virus would not let me run the program under normal conditions (even if I renamed it) but it would run in safemode with networking (the downloaded setup file needs internet access to download all the virus signature stuff amongst other things). For whatever reason, SpyDoc did not find this virus. Even if it had, I would have had to pay about $70 to get the removal tool from PCTools (maker of Spy Doctor). Other virus identifier/removal tools that I saw may have worked but all wanted cash for the service (which is fine and probably worth it if you have no other virus protection and you really want to get rid of this damn thing). That’s not to say there’s not a free one out there (didn’t checkout about TDSS killer) but I didn’t find any (I looked reasonably hard). So I tried the manual removal technique. I printed off the registry removal items and the list of instances of the program lurking around on your machine from several sources. First kill those three letter processes using task manager, otherwise you’ll be pestered by all those pop-ups while you’re trying to do this, or do it in safemode (didn’t try that). In my case, the virus program process was called “adc.exe”. Vista has two 3 letter processes that you don’t want to kill, dsw.exe and lsm.exe. The virus will respawn itself after a little bit so just keep the task manager up and delete it every time it does. Of all those lists of registry entries to delete that I printed off, none of them matched one another completely, nor did I find all of them, but I deleted all the ones I could find. The instances of the program to delete (note that you have to change your file options to be able to see hidden files to do this) weren’t all there either, but most of them were. When it says “random” it really is a randomly named file but it is atleast consistently the same name for your machine. Like I said, mine was edc.exe and the other was a really long name of a mixture of letters and numbers (like U3F7PNVFNCSJK2E86ABFBJ5H that was mentioned in one set of my printed off list). I deleted all the ones I could find and rebooted. The virus was gone but I had screwed up my registry somehow and the machine was doing odd things (like asking me what I wanted to open iexplorer with). Fortunately I had performed one of those “important updates” installations just 2 days ago, and unknownst to me, it automatically backs up your registry after the installation so I had a nice recent restore point. I restored my registry with that and then my machine was all back to normal and I was quite happy. I have the full McAfee suite of firewall/virus/spyware/email etc. protections on my machine and all were active, so I don’t know why McAfee didn’t catch it from the get go. So I’m not happy with McAfee. In retrospect I could have forgone with all the registry deletions and just have done the process killing and file deletions manually then the system restore. But I didn’t. Good luck to you all. I detest viruses of all kinds.

    • December 18th, 2011 at 16:22 | #66

Dan: full version of SD is 29 USD or so, Malwarebytes too, I believe stopzilla is cheapest (around 20 USD) and Emsisoft is running a promo for 9 USD or so :) I am not speaking about versions with antivirus, etc, though, but about antivirus alone. No anti-malware program is 100% proof, and fresh versions of parasites are released daily. Some offer trials, others remove for free. However, each of programs mentioned LISTS malware file locations correctly, which is important for manual removal.
TDSS Killer is designated against specific parasites that come together with rogues and prevent their removal.

    December 21st, 2011 at 05:08 | #67

I used a registry editor to let me run .exe files.
then i ran malwarebytes to get rid of the virus. Thing is i been getting a lot of the same virus. So either there is a rootkit that cannot be removed by TDSS Killer or the devil himself wants to give me this virus. I have no clue where i get these things. Personally, i think i need to update my firefox browser. Chrome has no issue.

    • December 21st, 2011 at 12:07 | #68

Cthulhu: (nice nick, by the way)
Get some program with real time protection and scan with other scanners (Spyware Doctor, Super Anti-Spyware, etc). It is undetected trojan or reinfection.

Hi, this has been coming back onto my computer for the past week…I use Malwarebytes and it seems to get rid of it for a few days but, then it comes back! I have tried many things..malewarebytes keeps removing it. However after it’s ‘gone’ my mozilla firefox browser keeps having tons of pop-ups form sites where i usually NEVER get pop-ups at all…is there something I can do to just block pop-ups all together? Is that why I can’t keep it off my computer? I need free programs that are safe and trusted to keep it off for good! Please help!

Wolfie: Get a decent antivirus with real time protection or good anti-malware (scan with Spyware Doctor). You might have a trojan, that is redownloading parasite, or you get reinfected.

My laptop was refomated last week after getting the Vista 2012 virus. I put an admin password in after reformatting. Within a few times of using password it would not work. It was reformatted by a store, they are going to reformat again because of the admin password lockout.

Actually, the first time they reformatted when I got home I noticed that there was only a small amount of the harddrive available. I did research, it said that battery should be disconnected. Store reformatted harddrive next day. Then within a few times of using admin password it stopped working. Everything is password protected, downloads, defag, etc… Because of the holidays they asked me to bring it in next week to reformat again. I am now convinced that another reformat is going to result with password being locked out again.

    Help please!

WHAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND IS why aren’t the people who created this Vista Home Security 2012 virus being ARRESTED? Especially when receiving credit card payments from all the victims? Basically what theyre doing is no different than if men locked people in their homes and would only let them out after they subscribed to their service they never asked for. Its black mail but instead of locking people in their homes, they are blocking access to the internet which should be a crime and these predators should be held responsible.

Ok I have successfully removed this program with the most helpful and FREE antivirus software. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware can detect this and remove it. Hope this helps :D

Brendan Wilmer: Do not misguide people.
      1. Full Malwarebytes is not free.
      2. It is not antivirus
      3. Like any software, it can not detect all versions of this.

    @admin
Please help. I followed the instructions using Spy Doctor and removed the virus manually (I only removed the file and the process). It seems to be gone, but now none of my applications will open. They all ask which program I’d like to use to run them. I can open some by right clicking and pressing start rather than open, but System restore won’t work at all. How do I deal with this?

    • January 2nd, 2012 at 16:49 | #79

Klee: you have to fix .exe file associations.

    @admin
Hi, sorry to bug again, but I don’t know how to fix this problem. Some of the basic applications in the control panel now just say “not found” and System Restore still won’t open. Can somebody help me?

    • January 6th, 2012 at 11:14 | #82

Klee: some of the applications might be hidden. Make sure you see hidden and system files, and search whole C: for rstrui.exe (System restore executable)

My computer just got infected with this too and the reg key does not work as you said above, is there a new one? Also when I try installing SP it gets stuck on registry entries, what can I do about that?

    • January 15th, 2012 at 12:54 | #88

Try 9443-077673-5028. Also, you might run Anti-malware programs by killing the malware process (either with task manager, or download process explorer, save on desktop, rename executable to iexplore.exe )

Will Trend Micro be able to find and remove the virus or can it be solved using a back up restore to a point before the virus?

    • January 15th, 2012 at 22:33 | #90

Andre : eventually all major antiviruses should be able to find and remove parasites. The questions are how long will it take to add it to databases and if one will be able to launch it on infected system
