Safe Search - How to remove?

 

Safe Search is a browser hijacker that changes browser settings of the infected machine and causes lots of inconveniences and disturbs your work. It mainly gets installed with some free tools without users’ knowledge. The program is meant to earn money for its creators by promoting various websites. However, it uses an unfair method to do it, so Safe Search is considered to be a an unwanted program.

It is recommended to remove Safe Search either using an anti-malware program, like Spyhunter or StopZilla or manually. Since the latter methods if quite challenging, we have developed a guide how to do it and provided it below this article.

Safe Search changes your homepage and default search engine to safesearch.net. The program program includes lots of sponsored links to your search results and pose risk to get your system infected. It can easily redirect you to some compromised websites that contain malware infections. There are several versions of this browser hijacker, so it can use slightly different names sometimes. You are recommended to remove Safe Search from your system as it can bring lots of problems to you.

If you want to avoid such applications getting access to your browsers, you should be very attentive when installing any free programs from the internet and refuse installing any unknown programs to your computer. If often comes bundled to free music of video players, download managers, PDF creators, etc. Check the reliability of the sources of your downloads too.

How to remove SafeSearch using Windows Control Panel

Many hijackers and adware like Safe Search install some of their components as regular windows programs as well as additional software. This part of malware can be uninstalled from Control Panel. To access it, do the following.

  1. Start->Control Panel (older Windows) or press Windows Key->Search and enter Control Panel (Windows 8);
     
  2. Choose Uninstall Program;
     
  3. Go through a list of programs and select entries related to SafeSearch .
     
  4. Click uninstall button.
     
  5. In many cases anti-malware programs are better at detecting related parasites, thus I recommend installing Spyhunter, Malwarebytes and Stopzilla to identify other programs that might be a part of this infection.
     

This method will not remove some of browser plugins therefore proceed to the next part of the removal guide.

Removing Safe Search from your browsers

  Top Remove shortcut hijack (all browsers) (optional): If your browser opens SafeSearch page on startup only, try this:

  1. Right click on your browser icon. Choose Properties;
     
  2. Open Short cut tab;
     
  3. Delete SafeSearch part from target field.

  Top How To remove Safe Search from Google Chrome:

  1. Click on the 3 horizontal lines icon on a browser toolbar and Select More Tools->Extensions
     
  2. Select all malicious extensions and delete them.
     
  3. Click on the 3 horizontal lines icon on a browser toolbar and Select Settings
     
  4. Select Manage Search engines  
  5. Remove unnecessary search engines from the list
     
  6. Go back to settings. On Startup choose Open blank page (you can remove undesired pages from the set pages link too).
  7. If your homepage was changed, click on Chrome menu on the top right corner, select Settings. Select Open a specific page or set of pages and click on Set pages.
     
  8. Delete malicious search websites at a new Startup pages window by clicking “X” next to them.
  9. Click on the 3 horizontal lines icon on a browser toolbar and select Setting and click on Manage search engines.
     
  10. Remove malicious search websites in a new Search engines window.

(Optional) Reset your browser’s settings

If you are still experiencing any issues related to SafeSearch, reset the settings of your browser to its default settings.

  1. Click on a Chrome’s menu button (three horizontal lines) and select Settings.
     
  2. Scroll to the end of the page and click on the Reset browser settings button.
  3. Click on the Reset button on the confirmation box.

If you cannot reset your browser settings and the problem persists, scan your system with an anti-malware program.

  Top How To remove Safe Search from Firefox:

  1. Click on the menu button on the top right corner of a Mozilla window and select the “Add-ons” icon (Or press Ctrl+Shift+A on your keyboard).
     
  2. Go through Extensions and Addons list, remove everything Safe Search related and items you do not recognise. If you do not know the extension and it is not made by Mozilla, Google, Microsoft, Oracle or Adobe then you probably do not need it.
     
  3. Enter “about:config” in URL bar and hit enter. This will open the settings page
     
  4. Type “Keyword.url” in the search box. Right click and reset it.
     
  5. Type “browser.search.defaultengine” in the search box. Right click and reset it.
  6. Type “browser.search.selectedengine” in the search box. Right click and reset it.
  7. Search for “browser.newtab.url”. Right-click and reset it. This will make sure that the search page won’t launch on every new tab.
  8. If the settings revert and the scan with anti-malware programs is clean: close Firefox, open file explorer and enter %AppData% in the address bar. Enter user.js in the search box. If this file exists, rename it and start Firefox again. You will have to repeat the steps above.
     
  9. If your homepage was changed, click on the Firefox menu in the top right corner, select Options-> General. Enter a preferable URL to the homepage field and click Restore to Default.
     

(Optional) Reset your browser’s settings

If you are still experiencing any issues related to Safe Search, reset the settings of your browser to its default settings.

  1. Click on the menu button on the top right corner of a Mozilla Firefox window. Click on the Help button.
     
  2. Choose TroubleshootingInformation on the Help menu.
     
  3. Click on the Reset Firefox button.
     
  4. Click on the Reset Firefox button on the confirmation box. Mozilla Firefox will close and change the settings to default.
     

If the problem persists, scan your system with an anti-malware program to identify malicious entries.

  Top How to remove Safe Search virus from Internet Explorer (older versions):

  1. Click on the arrow on the right of the search box.
  2. Do the following: on IE8-9 choose Manage Search providers, on IE7 click Change search defaults.
  3. Remove the SafeSearch from the list.

How to remove Safe Search from IE 11:

  1. Click on the Settings icon (top right)->Manage Addons.
     
  2. Go through Toolbars and extensions. Remove everything related to SafeSearch and items you do not know that are made not by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Oracle or Adobe.
     
  3. Select Search Providers.
     
  4. If any of these search providers is not available, follow “Find more search providers” in the bottom of the screen and install Google.
     
  5. Close the Options.
  6. If your homepage was changed, click on the Gear icon on the top right corner to open the Internet Explorer menu, select Internet options and choose General tab. Enter a preferable URL to the homepage field and click Apply.
     

(Optional) Reset your browser’s settings

If you are still experiencing any issues related to Safe Search, reset the settings of your browser to its default settings.

  1. Press on the Gear icon->Internet Options.
     
  2. Choose the Advanced tab and click on the Reset button.
     
  3. Select Delete personal settingscheckbox and click on the Reset button.
     
  4. Click on the Close button on the confirmation box, then close your browser.
     

If you cannot reset your browser settings and the problem persists, scan your system with an anti-malware program.

  Top How to remove Safe Search from Safari:

Remove malicious extensions

  1. Click on Safari menu on the top left corner of the screen. Select Preferences.
     
  2. Select Extensions and uninstall SafeSearch and other suspicious extensions.
     
  3. If your homepage was changed, click on Safari menu on the top left corner of the screen. Select Preferences and choose General tab. Enter preferable URL to the homepage field.
     

(Optional) Reset your browser’s settings

If you are still experiencing any issues related to Safe Search, reset the settings of your browser to its default settings.

  1. Click on Safari menu on the top left corner of the screen. Select Reset Safari…
     
  2. Select which options you want to reset (usually all of them come preselected) and click on the Reset button.

If you cannot reset your browser settings and the problem persists, scan your system with an anti-malware program.

Manual Safe Search removal

 

Important Note: Although it is possible to manually remove SafeSearch, such activity can permanently damage your system if any mistakes are made in the process, as advanced spyware parasites are able to automatically repair themselves if not completely removed.
