Yumrecipefinder.com Adware - How to remove

Yumrecipefinder.com is a website that acts as a browser’s new tab. It has a recipe search function – as well as a few ads and a search box that only leads to Yahoo.com. Yumrecipefinder.com can only take over the browser when the Yum Recipe Finder extension is installed.  Restoring the old new tab page requires Yum Recipe Finder to be removed. It’s also advisable to check the computer for other potentially unwanted programs.

To get rid of any traces of Yum recipe Finder from your browser, you need to:

  • block notifications from Yumrecipefinder.com,
  • remove malware from your computer, if there is any,
  • uninstall Yum Recipe Finder and other suspicious extensions.

Yumrecipefinder.com offers to send notifications. It uses them to communicate promos and ads. Here’s how to bock web push notifications:

  1. Check your notification settings:
    • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
    • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
    • New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
    • Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
  2. If you see Yumrecipefinder.com, press the button next to it and then click “Block”. This blocks pop-up notifications from the site.

Scan your device with antivirus programs (such as Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others) to check for malware infections. You can have your antivirus app remove Yumrecipefinder.com or you can do it yourself. The scan is just helpful to check if there is adware or potentially unwanted programs that may have either caused low-quality ads to appear in your browser and lead you to Yumrecipefinder.com, or brought Yum Recipe Finder bundled with.

Go to your browser settings and find extensions there (you can check the bottom of this page for more detailed instructions). Press the “Remove” button for the extensions that you wish to remove. How Yumrecipefinder.com works

Yumrecipefinder.com is advertised as a tool for finding recipes. It’s also advertised as offering custom web search, which, in my opinion, goes against the spirit of Chrome’s single-purpose extension policy. Maybe that’s why a couple of antivirus apps marked Yumrecipefinder.com as malicious.

As a recipe extension, Yumrecipefinder.com is no so bad. It could be better implemented and more convenient to use. It would be better if it didn’t take over the new tab. But at least Yumrecipefinder.com actually allows you to search for recipes right in the new tab and even displays a list of ingredients. Yumrecipefinder.com uses the Edamam API to deliver the recipes.

However, Yumrecipefinder.com is made by Webalytics Media, a digital marketing consultancy – and that causes some problems:

  • Yumrecipefinder.com advertises various websites, including Myemailexplorer, a clickbait site.
  • According to Yum Recipe Finder’s privacy policy, it uses web push notifications to deliver advertisements and promotional offers.
  • The search box in the middle of Yumrecipefinder.com sends search queries to Yahoo.com. Yumrecipefinder.com logs the queries you type into that search box.
  • It’s common for those who visit Yumrecipefinder.com to also visit the sites of other browser hijackers (Breakingnewsnowtab.com, Watch-tvlivetab.com) and shady search engines that advertise such hijackers (Kensaq.com).

That last point indicates that it’s very possible for those whose browsers are hijacked by Yumrecipefinder.com to also have a couple of other adware infections.

How to avoid adware

Yumrecipefinder.com isn’t necessarily dangerous, but it’s still adware. Its main purpose seems to be to advertise to its users (and to collect information about them). That’s a bit different from regular, ad-supported sites, apps, and browsers extensions that put the product and the functionality first. Yumrecipefinder.com is defined by its need to advertise – why else would it take over the new tab page and limit the search engine used on it?

Adware tends to advertise with other adware. For example, browser extensions that inject ads into the browser which lead to ads for browser hijackers. Sometimes, free programs are bundled with unwanted browser extensions. Trojans download and install adware without asking for permission. A lot of time, it is ads online (often these ads are made to look like “Start” and “Download” buttons) that lead to shady browser extensions.

Use anti-malware programs (or maybe even an ad-blocker) to block malicious sites and to scan your downloads. Do not install anything that pop-ups in your browser want you to install and close the pop-ups immediately.
