How Watch-this.live hijacks a browser

Watch-this.live is a malicious adware site that tries to infect every browser that visits it. It’s very much like Pushisback.com, Check-message.live, Secret-video.online, and many other adware sites.

Let’s say you were browsing the internet in your web browser, maybe watching free movies or TV shows. A typical scenario for a Watch-this.live victim. You click on a video to watch, but instead of playing right away, it refuses to load. It asks you to press the “Allow” button first.

That’s not a video on the streaming site that you were on. That’s an ad for Watch-this.live. Pressing the “Allow” button doesn’t play your video, only redirects you to some sponsored site.

Watch-this.live tries to get every person who visits it to click “Allow” for its notification prompt. This enables Watch-this.live to send notifications (little pop-up messages) to that particular browser. If you go to Watch-this.live after agreeing to its notifications, it immediately redirects to a sponsored site.

Streaming sites (and other types of sites) can make Watch-this.live open in a new browser tab even when you don’t intentionally click on any advertisements. If you don’t check the URL of your site, you might not even know that it’s a different website.

Another way that sites like Watch-this.live infect browsers is through malware. For example, some malicious browser extensions (browser hijackers) can modify browser settings and send notifications.

However Watch-this.live got access to your browser, once it has it, it starts showing pop-ups on your screen. Watch-this.live works on computers, phones, tablets, and any other device that supports a browser with notifications.

Watch-this.live says: "Please tab the Allow button to continue".

Dangerous ads

Watch-this.live’s ads are annoying. Notifications should be used when they’re needed, but Watch-this.live repeats the same ads over and over again, with the little pop-ups getting extremely distracting. But it doesn’t end here.

When Watch-this.live uses notifications to send pop-up ads to people, it can target those ads based on people’s location and, possibly, their browsing history. This means that people can receive from Watch-this.live advertisements for local companies and ads that mention their location.

This also means that when you get a Bitcoin Era ad for getting rich quickly by investing in a new cryptocurrency, that ad spoofs a local news site and steals the image of a local celebrity to help with the scam.

Watch-this.live also advertises:

  • clickbait sites (the problem being that those sites are mostly ads),
  • gambling sites (that are vulnerable to being scammed),
  • advertises VPNs ( known for using somewhat misleading advertising),
  • low-quality or fake antivirus programs (like TotalAV),
  • browser hijackers.

Watch-this.live can expose people whose browsers it hijacked to some potentially dangerous stuff. It’s not like malicious ads are exclusive to sites like Watch-this.live, they can appear on almost any website,

How to stop Watch-this.live’s notification ads

You can use an antivirus program, such as Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, and others, to scan your computer. If the scan detects malware, you should remove it.

However, to remove Watch-this.live’s ads, you need to change some browser settings. You can find notification settings like this:

  • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

Find Watch-this.live on the list (you may see multiple instances of it with different prefixes) and press the button next to it, then choose Block (or Deny). This will prevent Watch-this.live from sending you any more notifications and from asking you to allow them again. However, it won’t stop Watch-this.live or any other malicious site itself. If you do want to block malicious sites, you could use an ad-blocker or an anti-malware program.
