What causes Streaminsearchs.com redirects?

Unwanted browser extension

StreaminSearchs is a search hijacker, but it’s not obvious at first. It may just look like your browser suddenly decided to use Yahoo as your default search engine. (Actually, lots of browser hijackers force people to use Yahoo. It’s a bit concerning.)

StreaminSearchs is a browser add-on – a little application that gets added to a browser and adds to or changes the browser’s functionality. Extensions can be found by going to Settings -> Extensions or by opening the pop-up to the right of your browser’s address bar.

Replaced default search engine

While many browser extensions offer amazing features, like ad blocking and dark themes, StreaminSearchs doesn’t have any useful function. It just changes one setting in your browser – the default search engine. It changes that to Feed.streaminsearchs.com.

The default search engine is the site your browser opens when you type a query into your browser’s search box or address bar. Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. However, Feed.streaminsearchs.com is not a real search engine. It’s a data-collecting site that redirects visitors to Yahoo or whatever site it wants.

Maybe a particular query matches an advertisement of one of Streaminsearchs.com’s partners and it can load the ad instead of search results.

The data that Streaminsearchs.com collects includes each user’s unique ID, their browsing history (from StreaminSearchs, the extension) and their search history.

StreaminSearchs asks to read your browsing history and change your default search.

How StreaminSearchs gets installed

StreaminSearchs has over 100,000 users on the Chrome web store. How? It’s certainly not because of StreaminSearchs’ features.

Based on web analytics sites, Streaminsearchs.com is advertised on game pirating sites and on file download sites. The ads that it displays use Download and Install buttons and look like download pages.

It’s likely that when people see a pop-up ad for Streaminsearchs.com, they assume that it’s not an advertisement, but the file that they were trying to download, the game they were trying to pirate. So, they mistakenly install StreaminSearchs.

Because StreaminSearchs is so under-the-radar even when it’s installed, people likely forget about it. Meanwhile, this hijacker collects data in the background.

“Download Ready” (like Streamsmob.com), “Ready: Install” (like PDF Converter HD Search), and “Recommended Extension” are the most common ad templates used by hijackers like Streaminsearchs.com.

"Recommended Extension".

How to remove Streaminsearchs.com

Remove malware

Scan your computer with antivirus programs – Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, or other reputable applications. If they find any malware, remove it yourself or with the antivirus application.

Uninstall the StreaminSearchs extension. The instructions can be found below and this should be as simple as opening the extension pop-up menu (the puzzle button), clicking the button next to StreaminSearchs, and selecting the “Remove” option.

It’s possible that removing doesn’t work on StreaminSearchs. There are a couple of possibilities:

  • Is your browser “Managed by an organization”? If so, we have a separate article on dealing with this problem (Installed by enterprise policy (fake)).
  • Does StreaminSearchs return by itself after you remove it? If you have sync on, that’s what may be causing this. Reset your sync in Chrome. Make backups of your data before you do that.

Block notification pop-ups

It’s very likely that Streaminsearchs.com asked you to allow its notifications and that it opened notification spammer sites in your browser, like Video-searches.com, Stream-all.com, Notify-service.com, and others.

Notifications are pop-up messages that are used by malicious sites as pop-up ads. Here’s how you can block those sites from sending notifications to your screen:

  1. Open notification settings.
    • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
    • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
    • Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
    • Edge (Chromium) – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  2. Review the sites that are Allowed (to send notifications).
  3. If you see an unwanted site, make sure that its permission is set to Block/Deny.
