Is Smedia.xyz dangerous?

Search engine replacer

Smedia.xyz is the website while SMedia is the browser extension. When SMedia is installed, it changes your web browser behavior: it replaces your default new tab page with Smedia.xyz and it changes your search settings. Search engines are sites that deliver internet search results according to your query.

When I tried SMedia, it sent my searches to Yahoo. Sometimes it uses Bing. These sites are part of the Microsoft search network and they’re not dangerous, however, very many bad browser extensions force them on users without even asking. Sites that redirect to Yahoo have a chance to get a share of Yahoo’s advertising revenue. There are so many complaints online about Yahoo taking over people’s browsers and the culprit is always some shady browser extension trying to make money from advertising and from affiliate links.

Many users prefer sites like Google, DuckDuckGo, and others. It is not fun to be forced to use Yahoo by a random browser add-on, even if the search engine works fine.

Just remember – if your browser suddenly switches to delivering your search results in Yahoo, that is very unlikely to be some kind of a browser update. It’s probably the result of a browser extension being installed.

Extensions are very easy to install, even accidentally. And they can completely transform your browser, as well as get access to your search data.

One of many hijackers

Smedia.xyz is a new tab page. It doesn’t look bad: it has a search box in the middle of the page and a few links to popular sites like Youtube and Imdb.

It is a problem that you can’t add your own links to Smedia.xyz but still, this is much better than some other hijackers, such as Honlineradiofinder.com, which promotes clickbait right on the new tab.

Smedia.xyz is made by RocketMedia, a company that distributes an advertising-focused video player. It has also released a couple of other browser hijackers besides Smedia.xyz: Dog Tabs and FlashIt. These two are the same as Smedia.xyz: they replace the home page and the new tab page, then redirect searches.

Smedia.xyz replace sthe new tab page and the default search engine.

How to remove Smedia.xyz

Uninstall browser extensions that make unwanted changes to your browser. Any browser add-on that:

  • replaces your new tab page,
  • changes your search settings,
  • reads and changes your data on various websites or on all websites,

is suspicious. SMedia does the first two.

You can uninstall add-ons by going into your browser settings and finding the extensions settings, as described in the section below. Don’t stop with Smedia.xyz – check each of your add-ons, make sure that you trust them. Don’t leave unused or untrustworthy add-ons installed. At best, they’re bad for your privacy.

Scan your computer with an anti-malware tool like Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, or another program that you are comfortable with. Browser hijackers often travel in groups, so when one is discovered, Smedia.xyz or another one, a few others might have been downloaded together.
