What’s wrong with Quick Speedtest?

There are many legitimate internet speed testing extensions on the Chrome web store. Some of them may log your search history and browsing history to sell it to marketers, but that’s a small problem compared to Quick Speedtest and Quick Speed Test.

By the way, Quick Speedtest and Quick Speed Test are similar but not related to Search.hquickspeedcheck.com, Youronlinespeedtesttab.com, and the extremely similarly named Search.quickspeedtest.co. All these hijackers need to be removed, too, but they’re made by totally different companies, despite the similar names.

Misleading presentation

I came across Quick Speedtest while I was looking at Flow, an extension that, if you install it, injects ads into your search results.

The first thing that struck me about Quick Speedtest is all the reviews. At first, they look great – over a hundred reviews, all five or four stars. But after looking closer, something wasn’t right. Many of the reviews are referring to wallpapers, photos, productivity tools, tab organizing, media playback, and other features that Quick-speedtest.com does not have. It looks as if those reviews are meant for completely different extensions. In addition, the dates when the reviews are posted are clumped together in waves, all within a single month. It’s all a bit suspicious.

In a similar vein, Quick Speedtest’s icon is extremely similar to the Ookla extension’s icon. This could lead to misunderstandings, as Ookla is a pretty famous and reputable speed tester. Quick Speed Test is not.

Ad injection

It is also suspicious that Quick Speedtest asks to access your Google.com pages, as well as read your browsing history. This permission grants Quick Speedtest the ability to read and change the search results of those who use Google.com.

Quick Speedtest’s privacy policy does mention that your data, such as your browsing history, may be used to show you ads. Many of Becovi Media Limited’s browser extensions make changes to your Google.com page and they share the same privacy policy.

After installing Quick Speedtest, it does not inject ads or anything else into web search results. Still, Quick Speedtest having access to Google.com means that, if you install Quick Speedtest, then whenever you’re on Google.com, Quick Speedtest can read everything that is on that page, and it can add and remove items. For example, it could change where the links lead.

This is both a privacy issue and a security issue. It might be good to remove Quick Speedtest and find a less advertisement-oriented speed testing extension.

Quick Speedtest/Quick Speed Test both read your browsing history.

Problems with Quick Speed Test

Browser hijacker

Quick Speed Test is different from Quick Speedtest. This one is a new tab hijacker. It replaces your homepage and uses Yahoo.com to deliver your search results.

Quick Speed Test is by Tightrope Interactive, a company that, like Becovi, has released many browser extensions. Extensions like Quick Speed Test likely make money by using affiliate or partner links to redirect users to certain websites. All this does is make your searches take longer and potentially show more ads. Oh, and prevent you from customizing your new tab page, which alone is a pretty good reason to remove Quick Speed Test.
