PBlock+ Hijacker - How to remove

PBlock+, as well as PBlocker+, PopBlock, and others, are browser extensions that block pop-ups, but also display advertisements and track user data. They show dangerous ads that could cause malware infections. The data that they collect may be used in targeted advertising. If PBlock+ is installed on your browser, it might be best to remove it and find a more reliable ad blocker.

How PBlock+ affects the browser

PBlock+ is a browser extension and an ad blocker. Once installed, it detects various elements commonly used to open pop-ups and closes the new tabs that were opened forcibly. PBlock+ is a very barebones extension that lacks features and customizability.

While PBlock+ blocks some malicious pop-ups, it’s no better than the pop-up blockers built into modern web browsers. It causes some technical issues, too, by blocking webpages that might be useful, such as its own Details page. In contrast to PBlock+, good blockers and browsers allow you to recover blocked tabs.

Before its installation, PBlock+ shows what permissions it needs to work. There’s only one – to read your browsing history. This may make it look harmless. But being able to read your browsing history is enough for extensions to be able to detect new tabs, close them, and open new pages.

PBlock+ only asks to read your browsing history, yet it is still able to open and close webpages.

In particular, PBlock+ opens new tabs with advertisements:

  • Fake Flash updates.
  • Fake virus detections (such as 5 viruses).
  • Ads for get-rich-quick schemes.

The main goal of PBlock+ is to collect user data for use in advertising and to display ads in hijacked browsers. The ad blocking is secondary. But what makes this even worse is that the ads are dangerous, as they spread scams and malware.

PBlock+ showing advertisements is not surprising because it is made by Search Dimension, a company that already has a few browser hijackers. Besides, there are lots of fake ad blockers that have some real functionality but also display pop-up ads, redirect search queries, and disrespect users’ privacy, such as PopStop and AdPop Block.

How PBlock+ is installed

PBlock+ is advertised by deceptive advertisements similar to those that it displays in its pop-ups: the Download Ready ad, the Recommended Extension ad, and similar ads.

Download Ready template

These pages are advertised online as pop-ups on MP3 converter sites, movie streaming sites, and similar websites.

The ads for PBlock+ are meant to make you think that the extension is required. In reality, they’re just ads that you are free to ignore.

If a website seems like it requires you to subscribe to notifications or download or install software, it probably doesn’t. It’s just showing a deceptively designed advertisement.

How to remove PBlock+

Uninstall PBlock+, PBlocker, and other malicious browser add-ons. You can do it in the extension area in the upper right corner of your browser (click the puzzle piece button) or on the settings page for extensions as described below.

Use an anti-malware program, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others, to find and remove suspicious programs, adware, and malicious browser extensions.

If Popblockplus.com or another site is sending you unwanted advertisements, you can block them in your browser settings.

If you frequent sites that display aggressive pop-up ads, such as the ones that promote PBlock+, you may want to do something to avoid malicious ads in the future. It could be helpful to use a real and reputable ad blocker, as well as a program that can block malicious websites, such as an anti-malware tool that blocks suspicious sites for you.
