Problems with My Weather Free

New tab replacer

My Weather Free’s promise is to help you get weather forecasts. To do this, My Weather Free makes available quick links to Weather.com, Wunderground.com, Cyclocane.com, and other sites. That’s all the weather functionality that it offers.

My Weather Free is a web browser extension – an item that gets installed on a browser to add or change the browser’s features. Many browser extensions are very useful, such as password managers, mouse gesture extenders, and ad blockers.

But My Weather Free is not as useful. In fact, it could be harmful to your browsing experience:

  • It replaces the new tab page. As a result, your bookmarks and your frequently visited sites are not visible anymore. Normal new tab replacers seek to improve somehow over the default new tab that your web browser provides you with. But My Weather Free restricts your choices without being minimalistic. It’s just plain bad.
  • My Weather Free logs data about your usage of its site. As it redirects searches to Find.softsquare.net (which always redirects to Google), we need to mind this site’s privacy policy, too. It reveals that data about your hardware and software is logged, as well as your behavior, like which ads you click on and what phrases you search for. This is on top of sites like Google that also collect your data.

Search hijacker

My Weather Free looks and acts like a browser hijacker. It’s not as bad as hijackers like Myweatherradartab.com that promotes a bunch of clickbait sites, but it’s still not good for users.

When searching from the My Weather Free tab, Find.softsquare.net is loaded. It then opens Google.com (even if you use a non-Google search engine as the default in your browser). Softsquare.net is by ClientConnect, the same company that controls Powerofsearches.com. It’s something that we’ve seen in many other browser hijackers before. These extensions are interested in logging your search queries, in advertising to you, and that’s why their format is the way that it is. The weather functionality is just an afterthought.

By the way, Softsquare.net used to be an address for a blog before it was a search redirector.

Neefla Technologies, the company that made My Weather Free, use the exact same format for their other extensions, EmailCheckNow and MyNewsFree. If you care about their promised features, you might think that they would benefit from slightly different implementations. But if you consider that the real goal of these extensions is to hijack searches and log data, then their implementations are just fine.

My Weather Free controls the new tab page.

How to remove My Weather Free

Uninstall My Weather Free as it’s detailed in the instructions below.

Check if there are any other potentially unwanted programs or bad browser extensions on your computer. You can use an antivirus program, such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others.

If your new tab page doesn’t go back to normal or if your browser is still redirecting searches to other sites, examine your other browser extensions. You should never have too many installed, so this might be a good opportunity to review and reconsider what extensions are allowed in your web browser.
