Is Movieapp Home dangerous?

Movieapp Home is a poor new tab extension

Movieapp Home is a browser add-on. It’s very easy to install (so easy that you can do it by accident) and, once installed, it makes some changes to how your browser functions:

  • It replaces your home and new tab pages.
  • It promotes its own website on your new tab.
  • It logs your search and browsing data.

Movieapp Home is not dangerous, but it does cause minor problems. As a new tab replacer, Movieapp Home lacks even basic features, such as background picture, layout customization, and quick link customization. In fact, Movieapp Home’s new tab lacks features when compared to the vanilla new tab pages offered by all main web browsers.

In its description, Movieapp Home offers movie trailers and celebrity news – and it kind of delivers, these features aren’t worth a whole browser add-on. Even with Movieapp Home installed, the site that it uses, Movieapp.net, is hardly any more convenient to use than any random website – there’s not enough integration between the two to justify Movieapp Home’s existence.

What Movieapp Home does well is forward people who use its search box to partner websites, like Bing. It makes money from web search – when people use its search bar, its operators get paid. In fact, it uses Movieapp.net just like QuickMovie Tab and Movieapp Search, two closely related extensions.

Movieapp Home asks to replace your new tab page.

It gets installed without permission

I wasn’t joking when I said that you can install Movieapp Home without meaning to. It’s intentionally advertised to push people to add it to their browsers. Dishonest ads make Movieapp Home appear as though it’s necessary to be installed to access some unrelated content on the internet.

These ads tend to appear on free movie sites, video converter sites, torrenting, pirating websites, etc.

Indeed, when looking at the Chrome Web Store reviews of extensions that use such ads to spread, you can sometimes see people say that they had to install this extension to download a mod or watch a movie.

Movieapp Home is advertised as "Recommended Extension".

This is almost never true. If it looks as though a website requires you to install an add-on, you should first make sure that it’s not just an advertisement that you’re looking at. Close the “Please add Movieapp Home” or another ad and continue browsing like normal.

Consider using ad blockers when you visit sites that display aggressive pop-up ads. Ad blockers can help you avoid obnoxious pop-ups as well as malicious ads Malvertising.

How to remove Movieapp Home

Uninstall the Movieapp Home extension from your browser. You can do it in the settings as described at the bottom.

In case there are other, more serious security problems, get your antivirus program to scan your computer (we recommend Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, but any reputable antivirus tool is good) and review your scan results. If anything suspicious was detected, delete it.

After getting rid of Movieapp Home and making sure that your computer is clean, review the settings of your browsers, specifically your default search engine and new tab settings. The instructions can be found at the bottom.
