What is Mono6.biz

Notification hijacker

Mono6.biz is one of a group of similarly named sites, including Mono3.biz, Mono4.biz, Mono4.biz, Mono9.biz, Mono11.biz, Mono16.biz, and others. These sites are all the same, so if you’re affected by not Mono6.biz but one of the others, then everything in this post still applies.

Mono6.biz has no content on it. No articles or posts. It does only two things:

  • ask you to press the allow button on the notification pop-up (this allows Mono6.biz to send notifications to your browser),
  • send notifications to those who have allowed them.

Mono6.biz is advertised on pirating sites, mostly. It appears in a new browser tab, asking you to click the Allow button to prove that you’re not a robot. Being asked to prove that you’re a human is not unusual, so, some of us obey Mono6.biz’s request without giving it much thought. Then the pop-up ads appear.

Adware

Notifications from Mono6.biz look like pop-ups in the corner of your screen (for mobile users, the notifications appear at the top). The notifications are labeled with “Mono6.biz” but otherwise, they look like ads:

  • scams promising to help you get rich quickly and easily,
  • diet pills, unregulated blood pressure medicine, and miracle cures for diabetes,
  • ads that insist that your computer is infected with viruses,
  • malicious browser extension pages,
  • other notification hijackers (such as Mol11.biz, Checking-your-browser.com, and others).

Having your notifications hijacked by Mono6.biz feels like having advertisements from a clickbait site being funneled into your browser one-by-one.

Because they linger until you dismiss them, they are much harder to ignore than normal ads, which makes them very distracting.

And because the ads are not very well regulated (Mono6.biz doesn’t have the same standards as other ad companies, I guess), some of them are potentially dangerous if you interact with them, since they may open malicious sites.

Mono6.biz asks you to click the allow button.

How to block Mono6.biz’s ads

Change notification permissions

To revoke your notifications permission and stop ads from Mono6.biz and other sites, here’s what you need to do:

  • Open notification settings.
    • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
    • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
    • Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.
    • Edge (Chromium) – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Find in the Allow list addresses of sites that you don’t want to show pop-ups.
  • To the right of each address, click the menu button.
  • Choose Block/Deny from the options.

This blocks notifications that your browser had previously allowed. If there are notifications that have accumulated, then dismiss them – no new ones should come. If they do, then you must have not blocked all the sites. Mono6.biz has many subdomains, such as 1.mono6.biz, 4.mono6.biz, 7.mono6.biz, 10.mono6.biz, that all can hijack your notifications separately and that need to be blocked separately, too.

Remove malware

It’s possible that notifications weren’t the only problem.

If you are seeing excessive ads, if your browser is redirecting you to shady websites, then there might be adware on your computer or your browser. Do a scan with an antivirus program, like Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, or another program to see if any malware is detected.

Avoid notification hijackers

The more popular Mono biz sites, like Mono3.biz, get detected by some scanners. You can use an anti-malware tool with real-time web filtering to block some malicious sites. You can also use ad blockers for the same thing.

If you find yourself on Mono6.biz or another site that’s asking you to allow notifications, there are a few things that you can do:

  • just close the page,
  • if you can’t close it because Mono6.biz expanded to full screen, press Esc on your keyboard,
  • if you still can’t close the page, press Cmd+W on macOS or Alt+F4 or Ctrl+W on Windows to close the page,
  • remember that you can always revoke your notification permissions later.
