MessengerLite Adware - How to remove

essengerLite is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that works as typical adware. It targets only Windows computers and, once installed, injects its roots into all available browsers. The program is detected as adware by several reputable anti-virus programs and is discussed on many blogs dedicated to online security. Even though it cannot be considered as a serious virus or malware, the results of its actions may lead to the installation of more dangerous utilities.

MessengerLite is described by its authors as “a smart and simple Desktop app for Facebook Messenger that works”. They forget to mention that apart from its advertised functions, their product works as a typical ad-supported software. Furthermore, the program is spread through several deceptive techniques, which gives us another valid argument not to treat it as a genuine program.

How does MessengerLite function as adware

MessengerLite Adware removal

MessengerLite is not related to Facebook. We recommend you consider this fact before you share any of your Facebook credentials with it. In fact, we strongly advise you not to specify any of your personal details with this third-party application. Even if you do not use MessengerLite, it will keep performing its hazardous activities until you finally uninstall it. This is a brief description of what the program does with your browser:

  • displaying a lot of advertisement banners and sponsored links not related to the websites you visit;
  • randomly opening new browser tabs with subsequent redirections to third-party websites;
  • tracking your browsing information and collecting personal details.

Because of MessengerLite, your browser will be used as a platform for generating the revenue for those companies that develop and distribute the program. Whenever you are redirected to third-party websites through the adware or click on its ads, they get the profit. Unfortunately, there is no decent content promoted through MessengerLite. Instead, the adware attempts to forward you to the following dangerous resources:

  • websites promoting other PUPs, adware or browser hijackers;
  • fake Microsoft toll-free support alerts (online scam);
  • dubious surveys, questionnaires, fake iPhone-winning offers;
  • landing pages of rogue security apps.

The information about the above-said activities of MessengerLite was definitely not mentioned on its description page. However, this is typical for all programs that belong to the large group of adware. They may be presented as useful utilities that will essentially improve your browsing, but when the installation occurs, the browser is no longer controlled by the PC owner. It starts acting in a very strange manner while it permanently forwards you to a lot of malicious pages.

MessengerLite distribution channels

According to the investigation made by Malwarebytes, MessengerLite may be downloaded from its official webpage. Nevertheless, we really doubt that it will be your personal decision to use the software. This is why its distributors use a lot of deceptive techniques to force you into installing the program.

Bundling of MessengerLite with free programs is the most common channel through which the tool is installed. There is a great number of free applications with helpful functions, the problem is that their installers by default are integrated with many additional apps. However, the information about MessengerLite as the extra offer is not always clearly disclosed. It may be provided in a small-print form, so it will be hard for you to properly understand what else is included in the bundle. When you click on “Next” or “I agree” button during the setup process you automatically allow MessengerLite to be injected.

The pop-ups promoting MessengerLite may also attack your browser when the PC is already contaminated by adware. According to the research, programs like GeoSmartDNS and Setli are involved in generating specific redirections that eventually lead to the MessengerLite landing page.

How to remove MessengerLite

There is no doubt that MessengerLite is not the right choice considering its negative impact on your browser. Furthermore, it represents a risk for the safety of your personal information due to tracking your browsing habits, search queries, visited websites, geographical locations and other private details. This data may be granted to third-party companies in an absolutely illegal manner.

Access the Control Panel, check your available programs and uninstall MessengerLite immediately from the list. We additionally recommend that you scan your PC with either Spyhunter to make sure that MessengerLite did not install any other malicious utilities while it was active. This way your system will be also protected against the installation of similar PUPs in the future.
