Is MajorAV safe?

MajorAV claims to protect and speed up PCs

MajorAV is supposed to be an antivirus tool and an optimizer for Windows PCs. It offers to protect computers from malware with its security features. Supposedly, it can also speed up computers, update drivers, and get rid of various errors. That’s a lot of features for one program.

On top of that, MajorAV also offers a Chromium-based web browser. Like most Chromium projects, MajorAV’s is presented as a fast and lightweight but customizable browser.

MajorAV (by Speedy Hldgs Limited) appears to be very similar to SpeedyFixer (Blue Century Software) and SmartPCFixer (LionSea Software). It can be downloaded from Majorav.com and on Avmajor.com, but it also has an affiliate program, which means that it could be promoted by various random websites.

It’s flagged by antivirus scanners

There are some problems with MajorAV. Its installer gets flagged by a few antivirus scanners: VirusTotal scan results. It’s labeled as a potentially unwanted program.

Why would antivirus tools flag it? There are a few reasons.

One reason is if MajorAV shows misleading scan results. Too many items being flagged as issues, even when they’re harmless. This is something that AppEsteem (a company that monitors apps for unethical behavior) had called MajorAV out for, although MajorAV apparently has fixed those issues to AppEsteem’s satisfaction.

MajorAV also has features that could be considered to be useless and risky, like registry “cleaning” and driver updating. Any program that offers these features really has to prove itself to be reliable, or else it can be considered to be junkware.

  • This is because Windows Update installs new, tested drivers for free.
  • Windows also has features to help you find and remove unnecessary files and free up storage space on your device.
  • And registry cleaning is considered to be unnecessary and very risky. Microsoft, the company behind Windows, advises against using registry cleaners.

Another issue is that the latest version of MajorAV appears to be from 2019 – a long time to go without updates for a program that ought to be keeping up with the newest operating system updates and online trends. However, people seem to still be downloading and even purchasing MajorAV even now.

MajorAV's installer gets detected by 5 antivirus scanners.

MajorAV’s outdated browser

As for the web browser, that was not flagged by scanners. However, it appeared to be legitimately broken. Some user interface items never appeared and the whole thing looked to be very outdated. On MajorAV’s website, it’s labeled as a 2018 version.

Browsing the web with an outdated browser could lead to some errors in how webpages display and it could allow malicious ads to infect your computer through unpatched vulnerabilities. Using an outdated browser is actually a big security risk. It’s best to avoid random Chromium browsers, since they’re unlikely to keep up with the latest updates released by the Chromium tea m.r
