Hippolyte-hag.com redirect - How to remove

Hippolyte-hag.com is a redirect caused either by ads or adware using Traffic Rocket and related advertising networks and can be really annoying. In the majority of cases this URL is invisible for the end user, but sometimes it breaks and hippolyte-hag opens with an empty page as well. In such cases, one might wonder why such a page opens at all.

Scammy advertising networks use various domains for their purposes that do not seem to be related to original link user clicks. This is done to prevent adblockers from working and for hiding the source details from the website it promotes to avoid cutting the network out from the deal. Advertising networks don’t want to go out of business and have to track all the clicks to be able to distribute money.

Research shows, that Hippolyte-Hag is used to promote shady websites, like fake review sites (that send people to shopping sites for affiliate commission without any real review), fake news/information sites that sell scam products or supplements and similar. It is very different from the claims on Traffic Rocket website where they talk about high-quality advertising. Some of the websites promoted are no longer accessible and will cause errors.

We have seen quite a lot similar parasites in the past, including Sax.peakonspot.com redirect, Go.trafficshop.com redirect virus, and similar.

Hippolyte-hag.com and adware

While I do not have problems with regular advertising, the Hippolyte-hag redirects have several problems. Firstly, hiding the path from click to the destination (and boosting the hippolyte-hag.com website traffic counts) is not honest for the user. Secondly, there were reports when this redirect was used in adware too. Such software, installed together with legitimate programs, shows ads unrelated to original content, inserts ads on websites that had none or hiding original ones and that might break the way some websites work too.

Typical symptoms of hippolyte-hag redirect or similar adware infections are:

  1. Similar ads are displayed in the majority of websites you visit, that rules out the possibility of legitimate origin
  2. The websites start looking or working worse due to ads: part of the text or images are hidden if you click on any of the links you get redirected through hippolite-hag to other sites that are not related to the link text. This shows that the person responsible for ads does not care about user experience and only on clicks and revenue
  3.  A popup or another unrelated tab open if you click anywhere on the page.
  4. You start seeing different, more aggressive ads that borderline to scams.

How adware like this infect the computers

There are 2 main sources of adware today: firstly, it is browser extensions and second, it is various software bundles.

Browser extensions  are a very common way to create adware infections: They are easy to write or buy and as long as they are approved, they have enough control to display advertisements. In some cases, even good add-ons are sold later on when the original owner does not have time to maintain it and implement new features. After an upgrade, such add-on will change its behavior and might have started showing adds like this one.

Another possibility is software, distributed for free. Plenty of software developers do not have a way to earn money from their projects except to promote something during the install procedure. They suggest to install completely unrelated software, and sometimes such software can cause redirects or popup ads.

How to get rid of hippolyte-hag infection manually

In the majority of cases, you will have to scan your computers control panel and browser extensions for unknown software. The software to look for should be made by Traffic Rocket, but it might use some different name as well. If unsure, scan with Spyhunter and delete the parasite automatically.
