Guvara Ransomware - How to remove

Guvara is a computer virus that, once it infects a system, finds and encrypts the majority of files. Then you’re asked to pay money in exchange for restoring the files, or else, they threaten, the files will be lost forever. Extortion like that is definitely illegal, and ransomware is one of the worst types of viruses.

How to recognise a Guvara infection?

Guvara is ransomware of the DJVU type, named after the file extension it appends to the names of the encrypted files. After Guvara has encrypted the files, you will see that they have the “.guvara” extension and are unusable. The virus also creates a text file named “_open_.txt”, in which the cybercriminals provide their contact information (two email addresses — [email protected] and [email protected]) and the price for decryption ($490 if you contact them in the first three days).

Guvara ransom note

How dangerous is it?

The files are not easily decryptable. Guvara uses cryptography to make sure that the encryption cannot be cracked. In order to unscramble your files, you need your unique private key, which only the cybercriminals have.

The Guvara ransomware encrypts the files that people are likely to value the most:

  • pictures,
  • videos,
  • audio files,
  • text and spreadsheet documents,
  • archives.

This means that a Guvara infection can severely impact the productivity of an individual or a business.

Not to mention that, if your computer is infected with one virus, it’s likely that there is other malware on it. Trojans often spread with the help of social engineering and if a person is vulnerable to that, there probably are a few malware infections on the machine. Spyware can be especially dangerous as it can steal your passwords or banking information. Needless to say, if you do decide to pay the ransom, make sure you are doing it securely. However, we recommend against paying the cybercriminals if you can avoid it because this harmful and criminal practice should not be supported and there is no guarantee that the files will be properly restored.

Unfortunately, as of yet, there’s no free decryption. If there is a decryption tool developed for Guvara, it might only apply for the files that were encrypted in the absence of an internet connection — that has been the case for other DJVU decryptors. Still, you can save the encrypted files in case the private encryption keys are leaked, or a better decryption tool is developed.

How to remove the Guvara virus

It’s important to keep your most important files backed up in the clod or some separate disk. Some ransomware viruses might try to delete your backup archive, so it’s a good idea to store it separately from your computer. In this case, you can remove the Guvara infection (if you want to do it automatically, we can recommend Spyhunter, malwarebytes; if you want to do it manually, make sure to scan your system afterward to make sure you squashed all the malicious programs), copy your files in from the backup, and return to using your computer.

If you do not have up-to-date backups of your files, it can be difficult to get the files back, but there are tools that you can try — look at the guide below.

Lastly, remember to keep your antivirus up-to-date, do not open unfamiliar files from emails that you didn’t expect, and don’t trust browser popup warnings, be safe out there!

Step 2. Complete removal of Guvara Ransomware

After restoring your system, it is recommended to scan your computer with an anti-malware program, like Spyhunter and remove all malicious files related to Guvara Ransomware. You can check other tools here.

Step 3. Restore Guvara Ransomware affected files using Shadow Volume Copies

If you do not use System Restore option on your operating system, there is a chance to use shadow copy snapshots. They store copies of your files that point of time when the system restore snapshot was created. Usually Guvara Ransomware tries to delete all possible Shadow Volume Copies, so this methods may not work on all computers. However, it may fail to do so. Shadow Volume Copies are only available with Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. There are two ways to retrieve your files via Shadow Volume Copy. You can do it using native Windows Previous Versions or via Shadow Explorer. a) Native Windows Previous Versions Right-click on an encrypted file and select PropertiesPrevious versions tab. Now you will see all available copies of that particular file and the time when it was stored in a Shadow Volume Copy. Choose the version of the file you want to retrieve and click Copy if you want to save it to some directory of your own, or Restore if you want to replace existing, encrypted file. If you want to see the content of file first, just click Open.
Previous version
b) Shadow Explorer It is a program that can be found online for free. You can download either a full or a portable version of Shadow Explorer. Open the program. On the left top corner select the drive where the file you are looking for is a stored. You will see all folders on that drive. To retrieve a whole folder, right-click on it and select “Export”. Then choose where you want it to be stored.

Step 4. Use Data Recovery programs to recover Guvara Ransomware encrypted files

There are several data recovery programs that might recover encrypted files as well. This does not work in all cases but you can try this:
  • We suggest using another PC and connect the infected hard drive as slave. It is still possible to do this on infected PC though.
  • Download a data recovery program.
  • Install and scan for recently deleted files. Data Recovery Pro
Note: In many cases it is impossible to restore data files affected by modern ransomware. Thus I recommend using decent cloud backup software as precaution. We recommend checking out Carbonite, BackBlaze, CrashPlan or Mozy Home.
