GalaxySpin Hijacker - How to remove

GalaxySpin is a browser add-on. It only affects your web browser and it causes Yahoo redirects when you try to search. Once GalaxySpin is installed, you may not notice anything wrong (maybe your browser’s new tab page looks slightly different), except that your searches are being hijacked. The good news is that GalaxySpin can be uninstalled very easily in browser settings.

What is GalaxySpin

GalaxySpin hijacks your browser’s search settings.

Browsers being the programs we use to access the internet and search for information online. Search settings are the settings that decide which search engine your browser will send your search queries to.

No doubt, GalaxySpin taking control over that setting is enough for it to seriously mess with your web browsing. It causes redirects to Yahoo.com, which has quite a few more ads than some other search engines. But it doesn’t end there:

  • GalaxySpin controls your search engine settings and can change the search site without warning,
  • it can also read the terms that you search for,
  • it reads your browsing history, too,
  • Galaxyspin.com may ask you to allow its notifications and, if you do, use them to spam your browser with advertisements.

Ultimately, GalaxySpin is adware. It exists to force you to see more ads, one way or another. The company that displays those ads gets paid more the more people view them. And GalaxySpin has already been installed by thousands.

GalaxySpin.com looks like a normal serach engine page, but it's never used by the extension.

How adware and hijackers spread

GalaxySpin, SearchWizard, SearchStreams, and other Yahoo redirects have been getting popular lately. But there doesn’t seem to be anything new about how they spread. They trick people to install them with deceptive marketing, or they infect the installers of other programs.

Infecting the installers of other programs is also known as bundling. And it can be used as an innocent promotion tactic, where an app is offered to you while you’re installing another program. But sometimes, dishonest actors bundle their adware and malware with free apps and then hope that people allow them to be installed – usually by accident. Have you ever downloaded and installed a program only to a few unfamiliar applications appear on your computer? It happens a lot.

GalaxySpin’s online ads are no better. Install.galaxyspin.com has pages that have ambiguous calls to action, like “Download ready” and “Recommended extension”. These pages appear as pop-up ads on other sites, ones for free movie watching and file downloading. So, GalaxySpin’s ads are designed to look like you’re still on the old website, like it’s warning you that you need to install GalaxySpin. It’s very dishonest and misleading.

How to remove GalaxySpin

To remove this Yahoo search hijacker, you need to fix your browser’s search settings. The default search engine setting should be set to your chosen website. Most people use Google.com, but it’s up to you which search engine you wish to use.

But to access your browser settings, you need to uninstall GalaxySpin. For now, Feed.galaxyspin.com is in control of that setting and the only way for you to get it is to either remove or disable GalaxySpin. You can do that yourself, manually. Or you can use an anti-malware program to do it. Such as Spyhunter for Windows, Combo Cleaner for macOS, and others.

The benefit of using anti-malware programs is that you can use them to sweep through your computer and check for other suspicious programs. You should do it if you suspect that more unwanted programs are left on your device.

If you get any unwanted web push notifications from Galaxyspin.com – little pop-up boxes that appear in the corner of your browser with ads and links – you can bock them in browser settings manually.
