Express Package Finder Tab - How to remove

Express Package Finder Tab (or Hexpresspackagefinder.com) is a browser extension that replaces the browser homepage, makes web search go to Yahoo.com, and tries to install more unwanted extensions. Express Package Finder Tab’s main function is to track your browsing habits and show you ads. This extension usually gets installed with the help of some deception and you might even download it without knowing it. Luckily, uninstalling it is relatively simple.

Express Package Finder Tab is a browser hijacker and a newtab virus in the form of a browser extension. A web browser is a program for accessing and interacting with the world wide web. An extension modifies how the browser behaves. Like desktop programs or mobile apps, browser extensions have access and power and could cause a lot of damage. Express Package Finder Tab does abuse its power somewhat. Express Package Finder Tab is not the most dangerous extension out there and isn’t even definitively malicious, but it should still be avoided.

Express Package Finder Tab’s functionality consists of links to a few package tracking sites. It’s really limited and not worth discussing, except to mention that you’d be better off saving a useful site in your bookmarks.

Privacy

If you install Express Package Finder Tab, it sets your browser’s new tab page to Hexpresspackagefinder.com. This page has a search box that you can use the search the web. The box leads to query.hexpresspackagefinder.com, which then opens Yahoo.com, which is where you get the search results. So, if you use Express Package Finder Tab’s search box, you are using its custom search engine.

If you use the address bar to search while on Hexpresspackagefinder.com, Express Package Finder Tab can still see what you search for. It can also see which links and menus you click on, what ads you click, what you search for once you land on that Yahoo page. This is all in Express Package Finder Tab’s privacy policy.

As a newtab virus, Express Package Finder Tab makes money with advertising. Targeted ads are more effective, so the extension is used to collect info about your search habits. That information is then used for advertising. Express Package Finder Tab’s author Eightpoint makes tons of similar extensions, including ones themed after email, online radio, and recipes. They all are the same as Express Package Finder Tab: a new tab page, a search box, and a few links to third-party websites. Evidently, the browser hijacker business model is good enough to make Eightpoint keep releasing more of these hijackers.

Express Package Finder Tab is so similar to Eightpoint’s other extensions that VirusTotal can’t tell the difference. After I uploaded the installer for Express Package Finder Tab to the site, it could not distinguish the file from Login Assistant Tab and, probably, a few others.

"Express Package Finder Tab"

Express Package Finder Tab’s manipulative installation

Express Package Finder Tab is distributed in ways that sometimes trick users to install it without meaning to:

  • Express Package Finder Tab gets downloaded with freeware and installed together with those programs. During the installation, users are not warned well enough, so they don’t know about the extensions being installed.
  • Express Package Finder Tab can also be installed by going to Expresspackagefinder.com and typing in a package tracking number. A prompt to “Access Your Delivery Details” and “Continue” leads to the installation of Express Package Finder Tab.
  • There are ads for Expresspackagefinder.com online. Adware sites like Notification-list.com advertise browser hijackers in their pop-up ads and browser tabs that they open.

In some cases, if Express Package Finder Tab is being installed manually by a user, the user is railroaded into installing Hide My Searches and Email Search Tools. These extensions are worse hijackers than Express Package Finder Tab because they have more power, but they might be less visible.

Thousands of Chrome users have installed Express Package Finder Tab, but no reviews exist for the extension. Based on that’ I am guessing that Express Package Finder Tab is installed on many browsers without the users’ knowledge. One way this can happen is if the users don’t really know about browsers, search engines, and new tabs. As long as there’s a search bar, they might not get suspicious. Another way is if a browser is so full of hijackers that the changes that Express Package Finder Tab makes are overwritten by another extension. In that case, Express Package Finder Tab is installed, but invisible.

Either way, hijackers like Express Package Finder Tab take advantage of users who are not familiar with adware extensions.
