enc_robbinhood Ransomware - How to remove

enc_robbinhood Ransomware

enc_robbinhood is ransomware, a virus that basically destroys files on a computer and then asks for money in exchange for restoring them. The files are tricky to recover on your own, and the infection reveals how vulnerable a computer and its user is.

The encrypted files are renamed into something like this:

Encrypted_[random caharcters].enc_robbinhood

And the ransom note is in four files in the HTML format:

_Decryption_ReadMe.html
_Help_Important.html
_Decrypt_Files.html
_Help_Help_Help.html

Text in the ransom note:

What happened to your files?
All your files are encrypted with RSA-4096, Read more on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSA_(cryptosystem)
RSA is an algorithm used by modern computers to encrypt and decrypt the data. RSA is an asymmetric cryptographic algorithm. Asymmetric means that there are two different keys. This is also called public key cryptography, because one of the keys can be given to anyone:
1 – We encrypted your files with our “Public key”
2 – You can decrypt, the encrypted files with specific “Private key” and your private key is in our hands (It’s not possible to recover your files without our private key )
Is it possible to get back your data?
Yes, We have a decrypter with all your private keys. We have two options to get all your data back.
Follow the instructions to get all your data back:
OPTION 1
Step 1 : You must send us 0.8 Bitcoin(s) for each affected system
Step 2 : Inform us in panel with hostname(s) of the system you want, wait for confirmation and get your decrypter
OPTION 2
Step 1 : You must send us 13 Bitcoin(s) for all affected system
Step 2 : Inform us in panel, wait for confirmation and get all your decrypters

Wants to make sure we have your decrypter?
To make sure we have your decrypter you can upload at most 3 files (maximum size allowance is 10 MB in total) and get your data back as a demo.
Where to buy Bitcoin?
The easiest way is LocalBitcoins, but you can find more websites to buy bitcoin using Google Search: buy bitcoin online

How is it dangerous?

Text files, documents and spreadsheets, image, audio, video files are all made useless. The enc_robbinhood virus encrypts files, scrambling their content into seemingly random data. The files are practically impossible to decrypt without the private key, which only the cybercriminals have.

In the ransom note, the cybercriminals ask for either 0,8 BTC for decrypting the files of one machine, or 13 BTC for all computers in a network. A single Bitcoin right now is over $5000, which makes the decryption rather expensive and likely targeted at businesses rather than individuals — businesses often pay the ransom rather than spend time trying to restore their system. Unproductive time costs and the ransom is a price some businesses are willing to pay. And though a significant number of people who pay the ransom fail to have their files restored, Bitcoin transactions are not reversible, so the money is gone.

If your machine has been infected by the enc_robbinhood virus, it is important to tighten its security. Make sure that your operating system and your antivirus program are up-to-date — the famous WannaCry abused a vulnerability present in out-of-date Windows. Antivirus programs often need to renew the descriptions of malware at least once a day to keep up with the new threats out there. Awareness of the social engineering techniques that malware distributors use will also help avoid infections in the future.

The ways that most ransomware spreads are:

  • emails with infected attachments or links: think carefully before opening attachments from emails that you did not expect to receive, as even office files can be infected,
  • in pirated files: sometimes people trying to download software cracks or to pirate programs download viruses instead,
  • scareware: fake warnings encouraging people to download and install software that is actually malicious,
  • by hacking into accounts: brute forcing or buying login credentials to, for example, a Remote Desktop connection and using that to infect a computer.

Because a lot of malware use the same methods of distribution, it is possible that there is more than one malicious program infecting a system. Adware, spyware, crypto miners and other potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) should probably be removed to avoid them causing problems in the future.

How to remove the enc_robbinhood virus

Prevention is the best way to avoid these infections — do not run unfamiliar executables, open attachments and links sent by suspicious email addresses, type in your username and password into phishing sites. Keep your passwords complicated and different for each account. Keep an up-to-date copy of your files separately from your computer disk, such as cloud storage.

To remove the enc_robbinhood ransomware scan your system with an antivirus program (like Spyhunter, or malwarebytes. Remove the malware it detects, or use the antivirus to remove it automatically. If you remove enc_robbinhood manually, scan your system again to make sure the virus is gone.

Step 2. Complete removal of enc_robbinhood Ransomware

After restoring your system, it is recommended to scan your computer with an anti-malware program, like Spyhunter and remove all malicious files related to enc_robbinhood Ransomware. You can check other tools here.

Step 3. Restore enc_robbinhood Ransomware affected files using Shadow Volume Copies

If you do not use System Restore option on your operating system, there is a chance to use shadow copy snapshots. They store copies of your files that point of time when the system restore snapshot was created. Usually enc_robbinhood Ransomware tries to delete all possible Shadow Volume Copies, so this methods may not work on all computers. However, it may fail to do so. Shadow Volume Copies are only available with Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. There are two ways to retrieve your files via Shadow Volume Copy. You can do it using native Windows Previous Versions or via Shadow Explorer. a) Native Windows Previous Versions Right-click on an encrypted file and select PropertiesPrevious versions tab. Now you will see all available copies of that particular file and the time when it was stored in a Shadow Volume Copy. Choose the version of the file you want to retrieve and click Copy if you want to save it to some directory of your own, or Restore if you want to replace existing, encrypted file. If you want to see the content of file first, just click Open.
Previous version
b) Shadow Explorer It is a program that can be found online for free. You can download either a full or a portable version of Shadow Explorer. Open the program. On the left top corner select the drive where the file you are looking for is a stored. You will see all folders on that drive. To retrieve a whole folder, right-click on it and select “Export”. Then choose where you want it to be stored.

Step 4. Use Data Recovery programs to recover enc_robbinhood Ransomware encrypted files

There are several data recovery programs that might recover encrypted files as well. This does not work in all cases but you can try this:
  • We suggest using another PC and connect the infected hard drive as slave. It is still possible to do this on infected PC though.
  • Download a data recovery program.
  • Install and scan for recently deleted files. Data Recovery Pro
Note: In many cases it is impossible to restore data files affected by modern ransomware. Thus I recommend using decent cloud backup software as precaution. We recommend checking out Carbonite, BackBlaze, CrashPlan or Mozy Home.
