Current Weather Tab - How to remove

Current Weather Tab, aka Current Weather App, is a browser extension that makes Currentweathertab.com – your new home page (except when it’s overwritten by another extension). Although Current Weather Tab is advertised as offering useful features, it really does not, and is little more than an adware virus. Current Weather Tab’s real goal is to manipulate your searches and show you some pop-up ads.

In short about Current Weather Tab:

Type of threat Adware,

browser hijacker.

Problems with Current Weather Tab Hijacks your browser with no justification,

reads your browsing history and other data,

What’s wrong with Current Weather App?

Current Weather Tab is a browser extension. It promises to help you find out your weather forecast, but it’s just not good. Its only reason for existing is to get as many users as possible, but once they’ve installed it, they’re left out in cold. They get a few links to sites like Accuweather.com, which negates any reason for Current Weather Tab’s existence.

If people want to visit a weather site easily, they can use bookmarks or favorites by pressing the little star next to the site address. Bookmarking a website makes it easily accessible anywhere in the browser. And it doesn’t interfere with any other browser functions.

Current Weather Tab is as useful as a few bookmarks, but it hijacks your new tab page on top of that. This lets it control (or strongly influence) how people search the internet (Current Weather Tab uses Yahoo) and which sites they are likely to visit (the ones that it links to). On top of that, Current Weather Tab has the ability to read the user’s browsing history, the terms they searched for, and the ads and search results they clicked on. This gives Current Weather Tab’s operators lots of useful data that they then use to target ads, to do market research, etc.

And what do users get? Their time is wasted, their new tab page is ugly and impractical, and their privacy is compromised.

Current Weather Tab is only useful to the people who operate it – Eightpoint, the company that also made Weather Forecaster, Go Maps, Get News Fast, and others.

How Current Weather Tab spreads

Current Weather App can’t rely on its unique features (because it doesn’t have any) to generate good word-of-mouth, so it finds its way on people’s computers in some other ways:

  • installed by adware bundlers – free programs that install a bunch of junkware in the background,
  • pushed by adware viruses,
  • bundled with other browser hijackers.

If Current Weather Tab popped up out of nowhere for you, then you might have got it with a free program that you installed recently. It’s not unusual for predatory browser extensions to hitch a ride with some free programs and spread this way.

You can also install Current Weather Tab yourself on the Chrome Web Store, and you can find the link to it on Currentweather.app. As for finding Currentweather.app, it is advertised on sites like Kensaq.com and Hidemysearches.com. Unfortunately, seeing those sites means that you already had an adware infection in your browser: either some kind of redirect virus, or an extension that injected ads into your search results.

How to remove Current Weather Tab

Scan your computer with an antivirus program (Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, etc.) to check for adware. You can also have your antivirus app remove unwanted programs, though that’s not always possible with some free versions.

Luckily, you can get rid of Current Weather Tab manually, by removing it in your browser settings. Current Weather Tab’s new tab page has a link to those instructions called Uninstall, or you can check the guide below this post.

Since Current Weather Tab’s sites ask you to allow it to send you notifications, you might be getting some pop-ups from Currentweather.app or Currentweathertab.com. To stop them go into your browser settings:

  • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • New Edge – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Firefox – open Settings, Preferences, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

There, you can see the lists of the sites that are allowed to send you notifications and sites that aren’t. You’re completely in control of these settings and you can change them at any time. Find the address that you don’t want to see any pop-ups from and click on the menu to its right, then choose Block.
