ConvertMySearch - How to remove

How to remove ConvertMySearch

Remove unwanted items

Uninstall ConvertMySearch, remove other unwanted browser extensions if you have any, and block notifications from Convertmysearch.com and other sites that are abusing them.

You can uninstall ConvertMySearch with an antivirus app, for example, Combo Cleaner for macOS, Spyhunter for Windows, and others.

But you should also review your browser extensions yourself and remove those that you don’t use and those that you didn’t install yourself. You can do that by right-clicking your extension icons in the upper right corner of your browser. You can also do that by going into the settings of your web browser and opening the Extensions section.

Stop annoying pop-ups

Convertmysearch.com offers you to accept its notifications. If you allowed them, you might be seeing occasional pop-ups from Convertmysearch.com on your screen. Removing ConvertMySearch won’t stop these pop-ups. To do that, you need to go into another section in your browser’s settings:

  • Chrome – type “chrome://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Safari – in the Safari menu, choose Preferences, Websites, Notifications.
  • Edge (Chromium) – type “edge://settings/content/notifications” in the address box.
  • Firefox – open Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down to Permissions, and click on Settings next to Notifications.

Find Convertmysearch.com. If you press the button next to it, you should get an option to Block (Deny on Safari). Click it to stop accepting Convertmysearch.com’s notifications.

How ConvertMySearch spreads

I encountered ConvertMySearch while looking at a file download site. Trying to download a file, I was presented with a big green banner saying “Download”. Clicking on it took me to a Get.convertmysearch.com site that, conveniently, was prominently displaying a Download button. This button was for installing the ConvertMySearch extension. Seems like ads disguised as download buttons are still popular.

ConvertMySearch can be reached by clicking fake download banners.

It’s not just file download sites that help spread ConvertMySearch. It’s also:

  • free movie and TV show streaming sites (at least, those that are illegal),
  • pirating sites,
  • game mod hosting sites,
  • notification spammers.

Fake download links and buttons, as well as unexpected redirects could lead you to install ConvertMySearch without you wanting it or knowing what it is. Especially when ConvertMySearch’s ads are designed to resemble download links and buttons and browser warnings. And once ConvertMySearch is installed, you might not even realize right away, as it’s quite sneaky. Getting your browser hijacked is almost unavoidable if you just use the internet for long enough.

ConvertMySearch looks like a search engine's front page when you visit it.

How adware works

Once ConvertMySearch is in your browser, it changes your search settings so that all of your search queries go to Feed.convertmysearch.com. It mostly redirects to Yahoo. ConvertMySearch also logs your search queries, the ads you clicked on, and other information.

ConvertMySearch might make money by redirecting your searches. There are some search sites that pay a bit of money to sites that redirect traffic to those search sites. People’s browsing history may be sold. And of course, Convertmysearch.com can make money by using notifications to display ads.

While normal, reputable sites already do log your information and show you ads, ConvertMySearch is an unnecessary site that cannot be trusted to respect your privacy or even to show safe ads.

And even if ConvertMySearch gets removed from the Chrome extension store, it doesn’t matter – it’s authors don’t keep their eggs in one basket. There are dozens of extensions just like it, such as Winki-search.comMusicstreamsearch.com, and others.
