BrowserProduct - How to remove

BrowserProduct is a serious piece of Mac malware that causes online apps to malfunction, internet search to be redirected, and the system to be unstable. It resists normal deletion by returning with a different name. BrowserProduct is associated with Safe Finder and is usually downloaded as a fake software update that tricks people into installing this malware themselves.

BrowserProduct adware

is similar to ChoiceFinder, TotalSearch, and other Mac adware apps. It is a part of a months-long scheme to infect people’s computers, hijack their internet traffic, and force them to see a bunch of unwanted ads. The makers of BrowserProduct make money off of advertising and, possibly, from gathering data on all their victims and then selling it.

To victims, a BrowserProduct infection might manifest in a few ways:

  • web browsers, email, and other apps freeze or crash often;
  • web browsers open unfamiliar websites and show a lot more ads than usual;
  • the internet works slower nd sometimes goes out completely;
  • BrowserProduct and other unfamiliar apps start up with your web browser and return after being deleted.

BrowserProduct can interfere with all of your browsers as it works as a browser extension. It can, to an extent, control which websites you visit and read your data on those websites. This makes BrowserProduct not just adware, but also spyware.

BrowserProduct spreads with fake software updates.

How adware spreads

Many antivirus programs recognize BrowserProduct as malware, so that’s good news for when you need to remove it. But there exist multiple versions of this same adware that are not yet recognized and can slip through your defenses.

BrowserProduct spreads through fake software updates. Ads on shady websites tell you that you need to install Adobe Flash Player’s new version, or get the newest macOS updates – but these ads are lying, as they’re made by criminals to spread malware. BrowserProduct sneaks in like a trojan, victims don’t even realize that they let malware in their Mac.

You can expect to encounter malicious ads on free movie and TV show sites and other illegal sites, but also on old or small websites that have been abandoned by their creators. Malicious actors infect these sites to make them open malicious ads immediately upon landing.

You can download the malicious installer, but you need to run it to infect your Mac. If you download a suspicious file, scan it first with an anti-malware app and then decide if you trust it to be safe enough to run.

How to remove BrowserProduct

Probably the best way to get rid of BrowserProduct is to use an anti-malware program, like Combo Cleaner, Malwarebytes, or another app that you trust. You might also have to start your Mac in safe mode to avoid BrowserProduct interfering. Safe mode prevents unnecessary apps from running, including BrowserProduct and a bunch of other apps. To enter safe mode, start (or restart) your Mac and hold the Shift button until you see the login screen. Then, download your anti-malware app and run it.

Some security apps don’t yet recognize BrowserProduct or somehow fail to get rid of it. If so, you can try to remove the malware manually. Open the Go to Folder dialog in Finder (it’s in the Go menu) and visit the ~/Library/LaunchAgents, ~/Library/Application Support, /Library/Application Support, and /Library/LaunchDaemons folders. Make backup copies of these folders before making changes, or create a restore point for your Mac. Then, look in the folders for suspicious items. Delete anything related to SafeFinder, BrowserProduct, or similar names. Look up the file names online if you aren’t sure. Drag BrowserProduct from your Applications folder to Trash and also remove all suspicious extensions from your web browsers (instructions below).

Look in System Preferences and look for Profiles. If there are any that you don’t recognize, delete them (select and press the minus button).

After you have cleaned your computer, change your passwords. The BrowserProduct browser extension had access to all of the webpages that you visited, which might have exposed your usernames, passwords, and whatever else you typed. Also, be careful of email scams that might try to scare you.
