Bright Tab Redirects - How to remove

Bright Tab (found on Bright-tab.com) is a browser extension that promises to improve your new tab with cool new features. Unfortunately, it’s more interested in logging user data and sending them to potentially unwanted websites than in delivering good functionality. Bright Tab’s new tab lacks customizability and privacy, and we recommend avoiding it.

Is Bright Tab worth using?

Bright Tab lacks useful features

Bright Tab is a browser add-on for Chrome, Chromium-based browsers, and Firefox. When Bright Tab is installed, it replaces the new tab/home page with its own. If it’s installed on your browser, then whenever you open a new tab (click the plus ‘+’ button at the top of the browser), Bright Tab shows up.

Bright Tab is presented as a useful add-on, something that gives users additional functionality: a new background picture every time you open the page, a to-do list, and links to popular websites.

In truth, Bright-tab.com has less customizability and features than the default new tab pages in the mainstream browsers:

  • Bright Tab doesn’t let you add or remove links that are displayed on the new tab page. It also doesn’t show you links to your frequently visited sites.
  • Bright Tab doesn’t let you choose your own background picture.
  • For its search box, Bright Tab ignores your default search engine setting and decides for itself which site will display your search results. For me, it was Yahoo.

Bright Tab is not good for privacy

The extension’s to-do list is the only unique feature. This feature should certainly not need to take over your new tab page. It could exist as an extension pop-up.

As it is, Bright Tab gets access to your browsing data. According to its privacy policy, it reads users’ browsing history and search queries – data that can include personal information.

Bright Tab’s privacy policy is signed by Royalada, an online advertising company. It boasts of its personalized advertising technology, which means that it can benefit from collecting data about people’s browsing habits.

Reading an add-on’s privacy policy is always helpful. It can help you learn whether the program/browser add-on can be trusted.

Bright Tab asks to replace your new tab page.

There are better alternatives

A todo function on your new tab might be nice to have, but it fails to deliver a good service. There are alternatives to Bright Tab that are far better:

  • Browser extensions like Google Keep. There are plenty of note-taking extensions that do not take over your home page.
  • There are better note-taking programs, such as OneNote, Evernote, Sticky Notes on Windows and Stickies on macOS, etc.
  • For a minimalist notepad, type data:text/html, <html contenteditable> into your address bar.

Overall, it’s good to limit how many browser extensions you install, especially when you aren’t familiar with the company behind them.

Browser extensions like 2048 – Mega Pack of Games and Chump are presented as useful add-ons, but they spam their users with pop-ups and redirects to unwanted sites. If you are very selective about what extensions you install, you’ll avoid some of these hijackers.

How to get rid of Bright Tab

Uninstall Bright Tab and check your new tab and search engine settings.

If needed, remove other browser extensions. You might want to scan your computer with an anti-malware scanner, such as Spyhunter for Mac, Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for Windows, etc. If they find any potentially unwanted or malicious items, they will warn you.

Try to remember how Bright Tab was installed.

  • If it was an advertisement that recommended it to you, consider installing an ad blocker to stop malicious sites and ads.
  • If Bright Tab was downloaded in a freeware bundle, use an anti-malware program to protect your computer. Download software from official developer websites to avoid adware bundled by download sites.

Once you know how this hijacker infected your device, you can avoid similar infections in the future.
