What does Biosc.xyz do?

Deceptive installation

Biosc.xyz is a website, a type of Searchgg custom search. It shares a lot of similarities to Mxss.xyz, Bmps.xyz, and other Qxsearch sites. It’s basically a search engine that lacks any useful features. Biosc.xyz takes search results from Google, then adds a few advertisements to the top. The ads are for sites like Izito and Zapmeta, which are also sites of similar quality, but with more dangerous ads.

You would never encounter Biosc.xyz if it wasn’t for a malicious browser extension. These extensions get installed very deceptively, by using the Recommended Extension template and other deceptive sites. Basically, malicious actors create pages that say “please install this extension to continue”, then buy ad-space on sites that don’t have security standards. These fake warnings then pop up and people then think that these are genuine warnings (rather than ads), so they install the malicious extension.

Typically, it’s free movie and TV show sites that show these kinds of ads. Pirating sites and video converters can also be used to spread Biosc.xyz and similar malware.

Biosc.xyz gets advertised by the "Recommended extension" ad.

Malicious extension

Once the malicious browser extension is installed, it gets access to a few browser settings:

  • the user’s browsing history,
  • full access to any Google.com, Yahoo.com, Bing.com, or Biosc.xyz page.

This allows them to make changes to those sites. Adding and taking away search results, as well as adding a few advertisements. If you notice your search results consistently showing more ads than usual, you can suspect a malicious browser extension.

Extensions that spread Biosc.xyz are similar to Power App, Topsite APP, Alosearch, Omiga Tab, Mycoolweb, Mutli Result (that’s really how it’s spelled), Lucky One Page, etc. They tend to try and stay under the radar once installed, and they all use this icon of a blue sheet with a white ‘A’ on it. They also get banned very quickly, and new ones are released to replace them.

A quick test to see if there’s a malicious extension messing with your browser is to open an Incognito window. Just open your browser’s main menu (the button in the top right corner) and choose to open a private window. This mode disables extensions (unless you enabled them yourself) and shows you how your browser would work if none were installed.

How to remove Biosc.xyz

First, it’s a good idea to scan your computer with an anti-malware application (like Combo Cleaner for Mac, Spyhunter for PC, etc.). Not just to find and remove Biosc.xyz (you can do that manually), but to check for other infections. Adware and other malware can have caused Biosc.xyz to be installed, so just removing Biosc.xyz alone might not be enough.

To uninstall Biosc.xyz from your browser, you need to open extension settings and go through each extension. Press the Details button to check its permissions. If it mentions Biosc.xyz or if it is able to read and change your data on Google and other search engines, that’s suspicious. If it can change your search engine settings, that’s also suspicious. Disable or remove all the extensions that you think are suspicious.

Some antivirus programs are able to recognize malicious extensions and warn your about them, which makes this process a bit easier.
