“Your computer may not be protected” virus is a trojan that infects MS Windows machines and prevents them from working. The owner is suggested to purchase fake tech support products to remove the made-up virus, while the program itself, which display such suggestions, should be removed. ”Your computer may not be protected” virus is a ransomware scam, quite similar to rogue antiviruses that were popular a couple of years ago.

The malware is distributed by various fake downloads (typically the freebies are added such unwanted programs) or infected attachments. Security vulnerabilities can also be exploited to download ”Your computer may not be protected” virus on the victim computer’s system. Once the downloaded malicious file has been executed, the system settings are modified so that each time the PC is restarted the malware is activated. This security scam shows a browser window (it is the most prominent on Mozilla Firefox) with warnings about possible infections and prevents any other operation till you buy the support services from them.

The messages will look like this :

IMPORTANT: Your computer may not be protected

Your personal data could be at risk. It is not advised to continue using this computer without making sure you are protected.

It will also show an alert window like this:

Windows Detected Potential Threat On Your Computer

Windows Security Essential wasn’t able to block virus. Windows detected potential threats that might compromise your privacy or damage your computer.

Error Code 0x8024402c, windows couldn’t install definition updates.

It is quite obvious that this message is fake: malware makers have forgotten to consistently name the affected products. Windows and Security Essential are different products, and MS would never forget to use the uppercase letter for their product name. No security program would prevent computer usage because of generic threats detected, even those which are related to the user’s privacy, as it is ultimately the user’s personal choice. Thus, you should not call such phone numbers and order the tech support products they offer you. As, in addition to this, you will be charged with a pretty hefty sum of money in exchange for bogus security software.

Accordingly, the main issue is the “Your computer may not be protected” virus itself, and it should be removed from one’s PC. This can be done by scanning the system in the safe mode with anti-malware programs like Spyhunter, Malwarebytes or using bootable antivirus scanners from CD/USB.
