Update of Taboola Ads

It has been known that advertising networks do not always properly pre-check the content they distribute. Propeller Ads Media, AdStark network and many other ad-serving companies have been blamed for distributing inappropriate and frequently malware-laden advertisements.

Taboola network has also received its fair share of criticism, and at the end of September (2017), this lashing has gotten worse. For some background information, we briefly remind that Taboola serves native ads and content in boxes “around the web” and “recommended for you”. In most cases, California-based advertising company has been blamed for disturbing fake or little-value news (More about Taboola).

In September of 2017, Taboola was noticed to be exploited by hackers. Crooks appear to have contributed to domains like with malicious advertisements (Taboola served malvertising on The website promoted content which was regular for Taboola, but after users clicked on the boxes with ads, they were immediately transferred to technical support scams. The messages claimed to be from “Windows Security” and urged people to type in their usernames and passwords. In addition, the scam urged people to contact +1-833-335-1333 toll free helpline which is obviously unreliable as well.

The problem with Taboola network is that it does not properly review the content it agrees to promote. Therefore, website owners that include the adverts of this ad-company might be unknowingly endorsing visitation to scam domains. In this case, representatives of did not agree to incorporate malicious advertisements into their website. Taboola did not do a great job in removing malware-laden ads, leading to tech support hoax (Taboola ads exploited to distribute technical support scams). This scam only aims to frighten users into revealing information about themselves and calling the unreliable number.

By clicking on the deceptive ads, people are expecting to see, but they are redirected to instead. The latter domain presents the scam. In addition to this information, we have also learned that vicious advertisers did not cover their tracks. Their hostname is linked to a multitude of other technical support scams (How did hackers take advantage of Taboola?). Lastly, please be careful when deciding to include Taboola ads into websites. Do not randomly interact with click-bait and fake news articles.

About Taboola Ads adware

Taboola is a legitimate online advertising service, but many of its promoted stories, articles and websites exploit the “clickbait” titles that contain shocking information which is, strangely, not found in more respectable news feeds. Eye-catching lies have been distributed by Taboola: articles that have titles of “The hearing aid of the future is here”, “27 stars who hate the president”, “Kate Middleton drops jaws, providing Prince William is a lucky man”. All these buzzing articles contain no verisimilitude whatsoever and are produced merely for the purpose of increasing incomes for specific parties.

The concept of fake news is not new: it has been around for a while. You probably have noticed chunks of online advertisements that redirect people to articles like “11 child celebrities you wouldn’t recognize today!”. Security researchers have dared to call Ads by Taboola spam and indicated that their distribution is disrespectful to Internet users. Most of the content that the service spreads uses words to criticize and shame other people, mostly celebrities and politicians. While it belongs to a high-technology company, which first introduced their service in 2006. It was founded in Israel.

Despite contributing to the Internet with fake news, the ad-serving company also introduces fairly-truthful content. However, most of the material features such names like Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Drake, Britney Spears ant other stars from the pop-culture. While this content might not be dangerous, we would expect many people to find it useless and also regard it as pure click-bait. Nevertheless, millions of people click on these articles on a daily basis and raises revenues for Taboola. According to the recent news, the company aims to extend its services even further and looks for possible sponsors. Knowing that the platform might serve 360 billion people from all over the world, the revenues that the company receives could be especially tempting.

The founder of Taboola, Adam Singolda, has addressed the critics’ reviews and even generated a team to try to remove the fake news and deceptive articles from their service. However, to withhold tons of advertisements is not an easy task. Therefore, we would advise you to be cautious when encountering content that has been indicated as Sponsored by Taboola.

Ads delivered by Taboola Ads might come in all kinds of different sizes and shapes, such as pop-up, pop-under, in-text, banner or contextual advertisements. New tab or even window with ads on it can be opened at any time as well.

Usually you will see those ads while paying a visit to e-commerce website, such as eBay or Amazon. You will be offered to purchase some particular goods or services at very appealing price rate. Do not fall for that trick – most of the time those offers are fake, they are just trying to win your attention and make you click on one of those advertisements this way. However, we suggest not to do that.

Taboola Ads might also collect your personal information, such as browsing history, search queries, most visited sites or even your IP and email addresses. They adjust those ads according to collected data and make them even more relevant and attractive to you this way, so chances that you will click on one of them rise. And that’s the main goal of developers of Taboola Ads because they get paid every single time you make a click.

Distribution methods of Taboola Ads adware

Taboola Ads usually comes bundled with other freeware that can be downloaded from the Internet. I.e. when you download and install some free software from unreliable website, it might be installed alongside without even warning you.

To avoid this happening, always pay close attention to the installation process of freeware. Never skip any steps and always opt out for a custom or advanced install mode.
